66 Mustang Convertible Help

I saw a 66 Mustang Convertible last week in a man's yard so I stoped and there was no one home,I left a note on the house and the man called last night and said it was for sale the asking price is 5200.00.I am going to go look at it today but it looked like it had been painted over the years and the top replaced it is a six cylinder auto in the floor and the inside had no tears plus the carpet looked new.He said his son got tired of it and the battery was dead but it ran great when it was parked.Is this a good price for this car and what do I need to look for when I look at the car today. How does the body look, check for rust in all of the most common areas. If it is a solid car, it is definitely worth the price even as a 6 cyl. Good luck.

Test drive

I drove the car today and the drove and ran great just a tire out of balance and one about half flat.I did see three small places that the rust was comming through the paint.I can email pictures if anyone can help me make a decision.The best in can be bought for is 5000.00. Thanks in advance Benny

yeah, verts are always worth a little more....sounds good........but pictures would be best

You've got to perform a thorough check for rust. Pour a gallon of water into the cowl. If it comes out under the dash on to the floor, you've got an expensive repair on your hands. Also get under the car and poke around as much as practicle. Where are you located? Where did the car spend most of its life? If you (and it) are in the rustbelt, then there is probably more rust than you are seeing. Here in Michigan, $5000 would be a great price for a lightly rusted 66 'vert, even with the I6. Rust repair can get VERY expensive. Ask me how I know!

The man just called and said 4500.00 was the least he would take.I had offered 4200.00 when I took it for a test drive.I poured one gallon of water down the cowl like was mentioned earlier and no leaks inside.Thanks all for the replies but this is about to worry me to death because I think it is a good buy for a covt,but do not know.I have pictures if anyone is interested. We can't really tell you much from the picture you posted. It has a nice interior, but you already knew that. We need to see some pictures of all 4 sides of the body, under the hood, in the trunk, some more interior shot. The more pictures the better. Also you mentioned the car was rusted, where at? It sounds like a good deal, but you need to crawl under the car and poke the floor boards with a screw driver and check for rust. Take a magnet with you and put it on the body were it is common for rust, such as the lower 1/4's, the doors, and the fenders. If the magnet does not stick to the paint, there is most likely a lot of body filler there. Be careful not to scratch the guys paint with the magnet.

It looks like a nice ride, and that price is really good in my opinion if not a steal. If there is no rust on it.

ok, so this is the email i got from Benny, i am just passing on the info, and this is a new pic kind of from the front :

Here is a picture of the other side and the only one I have left.The engine is good and clean and I am going to inspect more for rust and with a magnet tomorrow.The hood up is because it was not shut because of the battery getting a charge. Well, nothing sticks out as a red flag, but they aren't the best pics for an evaluation either. If the cowl aint leaking and the floors and frames seem pretty solid, then I'd say it's worth taking a risk on for $4500.

Remember though, sometimes things seem too good to be true for a reason. If you have some time to think about it, then at least write down the vin and the info from the driversdoor jam to check online and see how the car was originally compared to now (assuming those niumbers match). It may even be worth spending $40 on a marti report before you spend 100 times that. Also, ask yourself, can you do the repairs on what it will need and fix it up or even maintain it monthly with all the little things that go wrong? If not, then think about how much it will cost you in mechanic fee's every time you break down. I have no idea what your mechanical skill level is so I am just asking. I don't want to rain on your parade or anything, these are all things though that too few a people forget to think about when getting into the hobby. After only owning it for a year I have a feeling the owners son found this out the hard way himself and the last thing iwant to see you do is chase that $4500 with another 2 or 3k just to pass an inspection and get it on the road. New interiors are pretty cheap compared to body work and engine tuning adds up if you can't do it yourself. We will always be here to help and talk you through that, but the desire has to be there already.

This is wierd. A vert for $4,500? That is an incredible price for a vert with "minimal" rust. Let's face the facts, the drivetrain and suspension would be upgraded to V8 specs anyways.
