Recently I caught wind of a '66 convertible that is up for sale at a local car auction. It's a government auction, and all the vehicles are from repo or were formerly US Marshal vehicles. I was wondering what to look for in purchasing this thing, in terms of price, quality and whether or not the vehicle would actually run if I did take it off the lot.

The #1 thing to look for is rust in the rails, inner rockers, floors, and cowl. If even a couple of these need replacing, it's more trouble than if the engine and trans are missing.

Amen to 2+2GT's comment. A rust free, non running roller is WAYYY better than a perfectly running rot box. Engine, transmission, suspension, steering, etc, are a piece of cake compared to rust repair or collision damage repair. Structural/rust repair requires a long list of skills that can take years to master. For some good examples, check out some of rusty428cj's threads!

It would really help if you could find somebody who knows Mustangs to go look at it with you and point the negatives and positives out.
