I got to the point where I have the box loose but don't have the clearance to remove it from the car with the engine in as its still hitting the engine mount. After doing a search on here and finding that's normal I have two questions.

Can I lift the motor with the transmission attached? The drive shaft is out so that's not a problem.

If I can't, am I a bad person if I just cut through the shaft?

I hate to do it to original parts, but I'm not planning on pulling the motor or tranny at this time and I'm planning to replace the steering setup with a rack, or at minimum a collapsible column. I now understand why people have mentioned getting speared by those in a crash....

start by removing the steering column inside the car, and the jack the car up a couple of feet and you should be able to pull the box from there.

unbolt driver's side motor mount. jack up just that side of the motor. remove steering box. done. don't waste your time fussing with the column. there is no reason to

Well if he is going to be swapping to a late column then it needs to come out anyway. And they are easy to remove and way easier to get the box out if its out.
