I know that the 67 GT, when equipped with an automatic, was the GTA. I don't think there was a "GTA" designation in 68; does that mean that all 67 and 68 GT's, unless otherwise designated, had manual transmissions? Specifically, could a 68 GT be had with an AT?

The GTA was a special package only offered in 67. I don't know what it all included but I think it also came with a deluxe interior, along with the automatic???

I've seen '68's with GTA badges. Can't testify as to originality however.

GTA was only a 67 option for Mustang, there were other years for Fairlanes though. All 68s were GTs regardless of transmission and GTAs could be had with either interior.

I don't think GTA was used in 68, not sure.

What was the VIN or data code for GT?

the GTA was only used in 1967

the easiest way to explain it is: its a GT with an auto tranny

which means it should have the grille mounted foglamps
power front disc brakes
dual exhaust with chrome quad outlets
the GT gas cap
the Handling package
rocker panel stripes
and "F70 x 14" tires

according to the record books there was a total of 24,079 Mustangs with the GT option (some of those were GTAs)

But is there a specific code in the VIN or data plate which designates the car as an original GT?

no

not that I know of

the GT (and GTA) equipment were options

so a 67 should (obviously) start with

7

then either have an F / R / or T for the plant it was built in

then the body code style
then engine code
and finally the The six-digit consecutive Unit Number

I know that there are websites out there they can track 67 and later cars via the VIN, and it will show all options and equipment that each car came with. It will also designate GTs, Cal Specials, etc. At least that is what I have heard...

so there's no quick way to verify it by decoding the VIN or data plate info, it sounds like.

don't think so.

you need to isolate an option that was only available on a GT and see if it is there or not.

I think (good chance I am wrong) in 67 a GT could have a 289 or a 390. But if it had a 390 it had to be a GT. Find something like that for the 68 you are looking at.

For a 67 it has to be an A, K or S code engine to be an authentic GT, but there were no special data plate or VIN designation.Hence they are pretty easy to fake if you have an A, K or S code car (and do your homework).

Also there was an upgraded suspesnion package for all GTs but there's a comonly held wrong belief that this was the "competition handling package". That was an extra option that could be ordered without the GT package, they are EXTREMELY rare.

I don't think the 68 I'm going to see tomorrow is a GT. It doesn't have the grille lights and it has the running horse and "Mustang" script on the side, rather than a "GT" plate. I don't imagine someone would want to "undo" a GT, but you never know.

Any ideas on what could only be found on a 68 GT?

After almost 40 years, most of these cars have been through so many hands, and could have been bastardized beyond recognition by adding and taking things off, that it would be almost impossible to find out what the car originally had.

I'm not 100% on this but there is a body style code for the GT's, they would have been Fastback ( 63 B or D) deluxe interior cars wouldn't they? Then again the 67 390 fastback I had was a std interior car, with a 3 speed Toploader instead of a deluxe interior GT car. I guess the GT's could have been either interiors?
