67 Convertible Vin #??

I have just purchased a 67 convertible with a 302. The VIN number on the fender and the door plate decode it as a 67 coupe, Springtime Yellow, 6 cylinder?? is there any otther place I can verify the VIN #?? Is it possible to have a coupe code on a convertible?

Not that I remember. Got a tag on the motor under the coil or off of the front of the fuel bowl on the carb? That may narrow the years down. Also look inside the rear quarter panels for Ford part numbers indicating they've been replaced. According to the shop manual the "official" number for title and registration purposes is stamped on the upper flange of the left front fender apron (not the fender itself).

on the top of the front fender on the drivers side, the buck tag (if you have one screwed into the same fender), and the build sheet (also if you have one). I found mine taped to the wire harness next to the steering column

The roof can be cut off rather easily, but the windsheild and underside are completely different. Are your A-Pillars chrome on the outside? Is there a large steel plate bolted to the underside that crosses the driveshaft tunnel?

Mine has it on the passenger side dash. When did they start this, 68??? Sorry, I'm still learning the history on these cars.

I believe the verts would have to have an reenforced rocker panel too. Look on the title to get the VIN then decode that.

They started putting VINs on the firewall/windsheild area in '68.

If the VIN on the title is different than the VIN on the body (door tags mean very little) then you do not own this car. If the VIN on the body says 6cylinder coupe then that is what you own, even if a previous owner put a V8 in it and sawed off the roof. If you paid for a V8 convertible and can show intentional misinformation from the seller you may have recourse.

If you have a sawed-roof coupe then I suggest you stop driving it imediately, the car's chassis is too weak for use and WILL break in half, not a question of if but of when. Things can be done to prevent this, but they need to be done before critical damage is done if it is not already too late.

Things to look for in case it was an unsafe I6 to V8 swap are four lug wheels and a 7-inch rear differential.

As everone has said, check the title vin against the door vin and look at the fender apron on the driver's side in front of the shock tower. There will be a notch in the fender about 3" long that uncover's the vin number.

Well since we are tossing out ideas here it might be a clip car and the coupe donated the front clip and the door.

I thought he said the fender matched too? Considering this 67' has a 302 in it, any number of combinations could be possible here, heck, it could even really be partially a 68'. I can't offer any more advice on how to figure out what you actually have other than what has been said, but I can offer this for future reference.

When spending anymore than oh say $1,000 on a car, the proper order is you check the VIN first, THEN you actually buy the car if things check out. It's a subtle difference in procedure but it makes a world of difference.
