67 coupe - rear defogger install Q

In my ongoing quest to add factory and/or dealer options to my plain jane coupe, I scored a rear window defogger off of eBay. I have the defogger unit & trim, wiring and a switch (looks like it attaches under the dash, has three prongs, and can be rotated into three positions.

So here's my question...does anyone have one of these installed that can tell or show me where the switch goes (I'm guessing there are some options), and maybe some guidance on the wiring? It is not immediately clear to me which wire goes where on the switch...there's a brown, brown/white stripe, and a purple one. The switch is labeled "H", "B", and "L". I also am not sure where the power source should be, altough if all else fails it will come off of the ignition switch.

thanks~

I asked the same questions a couple months ago when I pulled a unit from a wrecked 68 Galaxie. At that time, I was told that the correct location of the switch is under the ignition switch. Supposedly, all the defroster kits are the same. The only difference is the knob. This knob is supposed to match the radio knobs of the vehicle it is installed in. Do you know what year and car your unit came out of? Was it an NOS unit? Would it be possible to post a picture of your switch, knob and bracket? I don't have a bracket and was wondering what it should look like. Supposedly this option started in 68.

I have not installed my unit but maybe I can help you with the wiring. The power lead attaches to the fuse panel. It was a constant hot on the 68 so you will have to remember to shut it off. The connector can be a blade (like on my 68 unit) or can be a round that snaps over the fuse. Those are the only two styles I have seen so far in my quest for a complete unit.

As for the switch.....mine has a molded connector so it just plugs in  There are two wires going to the L terminal a purple and black. I assume the black is the ground but I am not 100% sure as my wires are taped up. THe brown with the white stripe is the power and goes to the B terminal. The solid brown goes to the H terminal.

Let let know if you want pics and I will post them. Good luck.....

Did you just sell me yours -- the part number (on the grille at least) is a C8AA number - so mine is from a '68 Galaxie as well, apparently. I don't see a number on the switch or bracket, and it's D0AJ (so a 1970 Galaxie) on some of the wiring. The knob is black plastic with a chrome (plastic) center.numbered C8UB (1968, U=??).This one must have been cobbled together at some point, it was not NOS but it looks complete enough to install.
I just got it today and haven't had the chance to clean it up and really look at it yet.

As for pictures...here's the link to the eBay auction, he had some decent pics up of it:

If I have to guess at the wiring, it looks simple enough. Mine has one of the "Y" splices at the end, so it must be meant to splice into a line somewhere. My trunk light had a similar "Y", and it was included in the wiring assy manual which showed it tapped into the driver's side door switch. I want this thing switched at the ignition though (I WILL leave it on if not) so I may deviate. My purple wire has the "resister wire do not cut" print on it, so it MUST go to the "L" (low?) terminal. Shouldn't be too hard to figure it out from there if no one has any better info. The more I look at it, I guess one wire is hot in, one is resister out, one is full power out. The only ground wire I have is a short one out of the blower motor.

I have sold a few in the past from Mavericks and one from a Torino but never an early one for a Mustang or Galaxie. From what I have seen, the package tray grill wil have the same C8AA p/n till the early 70 when they changed to colored ones instead of just black. The later grills will have DXXX- depending on the interior color. By what I have seen, they fan box did not change much other than the wire connection plug. My fan box unit has a solid brown wire coming out of it with a bullit type connector which eventually connects to the y plug you mention. The y plug has purple and another solid brown wire coming out of it.

Correct, my Purple and black wire connects to the L terminal. Not sure where the black comes from? Could be your resistor wire. Without unraveling my harness it is hard for me to tell.

Looks like you got a sweet deal on it! I have seen other complete early units go for $125-$150 at swapmeets. Sounds like yours is a dealer installed unit which would account for the slight differences. My was a factory install unit which is why I don't have the bracket or the correct Mustang knob. I can't tell from the picture but does your bezel day defog on it?

I think it was a pretty good deal, thanks! I've been watching for one and have seen some go for more than I wanted to pay. Patience has paid off with this thing, upper & lower consoles, a tach dash, courtesy lights for under dash and doors, etc. I think my best deal yet was $78 for an upper console in great shape.

The bezel does say "DEFOG" on it, which I did not expect but do quite like. It's also beveled upwards so that it looks like it could be installed directly into the dash without the bracket. I may do that if I just feel like there's too much crap hanging below it (fog light switch, seat belt warning, parking brake, vent handle, and now this). Incidentally the bracket has two mounting holes that look like they COULD be spaced appropriately to bolt directly below the heater controls, but I can't check for sure 'till I get the car back from the paint shop...

yea, i got an orginal one.. i got a pic of the switch.. anyone know how "rare" these were?

its a little to the right of the ignition, under the neat-o ash tray door.

The Galaxie had the switch mounted directly into the dash, which is why I have no bracket. If you decide not to use your bracket, I would be interested in buying it from you.

None67, is that a toggle switch? Is it just an on and off or a low high and off? Interesting..... would it be possible for you to take a pic of the package tray as well?

As for how rare they are, I have only seen two Mustangs in the past 20 years with them installed. One looked like it was original to the car but the other I have no idea. Stupid me didn't bother to look at the switch location on either car. I have ran across quite a few Mavericks in wrecking yards with them installed. I have seen them in 70's Torinos as well. They are all pretty much the same with exception of the switch and Bezel cover color. I tend to grab them when I see them if the grill is in good shape.

i've got 2 of them, but neither is installed, but i only have one switch, an NOS one i got off ebay for 15.00 bucks and then another 10 for the knob. the switch and knob are for 69/70 stangs that mount above the radio where the top switch would mount in a convertible. the switch is a toggle type unit and also has 3 postions, i'm assuming hi/lo/off. pm streetgrande69 he has the same setup i have and his was factory i beleive
