'67 mustang fastback

well early this morning a co-worker told me that his buddy has a '67 mustang fastback (C- code)for sale.it's been sitting in his yard for about 1 1/2 years has some surface rust over the body some unfinished body work i looked under the pass. side the rust eatin' thru the floor board to find out more i would have to rip the carpet out.well that's not the worst part....the car has no paper work what so ever (no pink,no plate).so i called DMV gave them info. of the car and they told that the car has a salvage title.how do i go about registering it.

keep in mine that i did not purchase the car yet...in the process of tyring to get the paper work in order.

I believe, at least in New York anyway, that the car will need to pass an inspection first before you can get it registered since it has a junk title. Ask more questions to your local DMV and see if your state has the same rule.

the car is in galt,ca. it has major rust so i decided to pass on tha deal plus i'm working on another project now('66 mustang) so no time and $$ for new project

Just because a car has a salvage title it does not mean it is junk. Mine has a salvage simply because the insurance company refused to repair it as the estimate from their body shop was $1,000 more than we were trying to sell it for at the time, about 3,400. We bought the car back for $500 and did the repairs ourselves for <2,000. No frame damage.

Your probably better off you passed on this one from the sound of it.
I redid a 1978 Trans Am SE 18 years ago and welded the uni-body into a solid one piece of frame down each side, then added plates along those and bolted top plates inside down to those. Overkill to say the least but car was sold as a rock afterwards.
Unless it was something you wanted for years and intended to keep, it's not worth the effort to get it solid and safe to drive.
Overhead welding is never a joy anyways,lol.

It is possible to get rid of the salvage title but it takes quite some time and a place to store the vehicle (not to mention a law enforcement officer willing to lie for you). If the car wasn't rusted it would be worth it. I'll never buy a rusty car again unless its something crazy rare and I have space for it and the desire to fix it up.

I've delt with a couple of salvage cars and had new titles issued for them after a thorough safety inspection. Each state has different laws, most will issue a new title that says the car was salvage at one time.

Rusty67 - what do you mean you need a law enforcement officer to lie for you? Just curious

There is some round about method to register the car, it involves waiting quite a few years and then registering it in another state. Then you transfer that registration back to your state with the new clean tittle. From what I remember you need the signature of a Sherif/CHP/Police officer to register the car on some sort of statement that you bring to the DMV. If you use old registration it will show the salvage tittle and then you are back to square 1.
