I have a few questions, hope you guys can help. I just bought a 67 fastback, and wonder what a 2+2 is? Does this just mean fastback? It Also is an S code car and in the decode I did the engine read 390 V8 GT, does this mean it is a GT? It has Drum brakes on the front, so I didnt think it could be a GT. Is it possible to be a GT without disk brakes? Also What is 4v? Is this 4 valve? I was told it was a 4 speed manual trans, and this obviously shows it was a c6 car. I know the guy that had it and he had it since 78, so someone must have added the 4 speed trans within the first 10 yrs of the cars life? that doesnt make much sence. Wondering if there are any other special aspects of this car I might be missing, as I restore it. Would like to know as much info as possible.

More info below. Hope you can help. Thanks

4-V is 4 barrel. I am not sure on all the GT packages and stuff, so maybe someone else could say. GT390 is a great motor, I have one in my 4x4. I tyhink it might just be like a GT trim package?

When I pulled up the Vin Info, it pulled up the 390 GT destiction. I got that info when I decoded the Vin #. I am just hoping this a GT I have found. either was its a great color combination , with Luxury interior. I am gonna have fun making it look new again.

There was a REAL issue with figuring out if these cars were really gts or if they were just added later. Have you looked for a build sheet? Often you will find one folded up and taped to the main wiring harness under the dash near the steering column. That will give you the info. There are other ways, but without an original invoice its spotty at best. The front drums are a pretty bad sign. I think front disks were part of the gt package. The GT designation for the 390 might be just that, for the engine or a sticker on the aircleaner. The decoders I have looked up dont list the 390 4v as a "gt" motor or use that designation. No matter, a big block coded 67 fastback is a pretty nice ride no matter! (and you can add all the gt stuff and no one but you will ever know). I didnt follow you....what transmission is in the car now?

edit,

btw, cut the end of the vin number off your post. Dont want someone using your vin for a shady deal.

edit, edit,

I did find several places online that list the disk brakes as standard with a gt...also, since this car came with an auto, it should have GTA fender badges if it was a gt. I think those would have had additional holes in the fender.

DITTOS. The deluxe marti report will give you all the info that you need. It sounds like you have a winner. Great color and interior combo combined with a big block is very desireable even if it isn't a GT. Good luck with your restoration.

1968 was the first year for the GT to have standard front disc brakes.

You could have ordered a '67 GT without the optional disc brakes. As scary as it sounds to have a 390 and drum brakes, it was possible.

I already answered this in the duplicate thread he has.

I think that is backward. Disks were standard in 67, but option on the gt in 68.

I have books documenting this.

I have also seen authentic 1967 GT/GTA's with 4 wheel drum brakes.

Also, why would they go backwards in technology and options?

I agree with mfp4073 67 disk standard 68 it was an option.

Why cost as they cost reduced everything for 68.

I am by no means an expert, but I am pretty sure thats the way it was. In 68 they shifted from real performance to luxury and looks and cost savings kinda all at the same time.

Dodge was doing the same thing with bare bones, "rubber mat special" big block cars in '68 in their efforts in the muscle car wars.

The GT390 came in both the GT bodied car and the std 2+2 fastback. My 67 was just such, it had the GT390, 3 speed manual trans, 9" rear with 3.00 (peg leg), 4 wheel drums, std interior. 4V stands for Four Venturis (a 4 bbl carb has 4 of these, one in each carb bore)

I have a 67 GTA along with Marti Report that does not show power disk brakes as one of the 17 options, but my buildsheet shows them. As far as I know, they were part of the GT Equipment Group.

What more do you want?

Here's one I found on a quick search. Sold at the RM auctions. I doubt they would call it a GTA if it was fake.

http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z11424/default.aspx

This 1967 Ford Mustang GTA 390 Convertible is outfitted with a 390 cubic-inch big-block V8, first introduced in 1967, with Holley four-barrel carburetors and 320 horsepower. It has a 108 inch wheelbase, four-wheel power assisted drum brakes and an automatic gearbox. Its body is suspended on the chassis with the use of an independent front suspension and live rear axle. It is finished in triple red with red striping at the bottom.

It comes equipped with a luggage rack, special hood scoops, fog lights, wheel chrome trim, tilt steering, air conditioning, and special styled wheels.

Of course, with so many Mustangs being sold the most popular packages included an affordable package with the GT option. This might have included a competition handling package or extras on the exterior. There were optional front disc brakes, a new front suspension, and a dual hydraulic system. The new front suspension provided for a smoother ride overall.

Ultimate Mustang is one such book. It states:

Key Features: 1968 Mustang GT ~302 and 428 engines introduced ~New GT emblems and hubcaps ~New striping ~Power front disc brakes standard

I think they are talking about the options for 67 not just GT/GTA as the dual hydraulic system was also standard on all 67 including the I6

Well, you seem to have answered the question.

Exterior

The 1967 Mustang experienced many changes and this included the exterior. There were many dealer installed options available as well as kits for Cobras. The new redesign resulted in a bigger Mustang that was wider and longer, however the wheel base of 108 inches remained the same. The Mustang was still available as a couple, convertible, and fastback. There were some changes that are worth noting.

The 1967 Mustang standard wheel covers were a 21 spoke wheel or a 10 inch hubcap. There were also some different groups and packages consumers could choose. One was the GT Equipment Group. This included power front disc brakes, chrome dual exhausts, fog lights mounted on the grille, a GT gas cap, handling package, GT emblems, F70x14 tires, and rocker panel stripes. There were approximately 24,079 Mustangs that were produced with the GT option.

This confirms what has been said, the disc brakes were part of the GT package in '67.

As far as the red car from RM, it could be one of two things. It could be the obvious, which is done al the time . . . a fake. Or, and who knows why, sometime during this cars 40 year history, someone changed the brakes. You be the judge.
