Progress Thread 67coupe’s 89 LX - Dyno Vid

Educate me a little. What do those mean and what’s the difference?
Oops, sorry. Those are just the paint codes assigned to the colors from the factory.

PRR is a newer color from dodge. It’s got a name of High Octane Red Pearl, at least I think that’s what it is. It’s a darker red that just breathtaking in the sunlight.

It’s a base clear formula. So no worry about a three stage application.

If you wish to go crazy, Ford’s RR is a beautiful three stage. Though I would use Lesanol paint for that particular color. No one else comes close to the depth of Lesanol.

No major progress, but some important updates.

The body is in primer, which means everything is now in primer. Just have to prep and then spray color and clear.

Speaking of color, I have decided on a color change, but’s not the Jeep red on the grill I painted. I won’t name the color, until I’m closer to being finished. But here’s a few hints. First the hood in base coat (no clear). Second is one of the cobra fender pieces (in clear).

I noticed this color on a car in the parking lot where I work almost a year ago. With the decision to change colors and all the additional work that involves, I had to buy a quart and see if I like it. Decision made, I’m sold, this will be the color. This color is sensitive to the light source, so the phone doesn’t really show how it looks in person.

Also, finally found a deal on Recaros. After a 13 hour round trip, they’re mine.

I can’t believe how supportive and comfortable these are. Can’t wait to take a drive with them in the car. Can’t thank @Mustang5L5 enough for sharing his knowledge.

And finally, the Black Friday purchase.

Not going for crazy numbers. Mainly want to eliminate the factory Eaton’s heat soak issues and make more power at similar boost levels.

Time to drop the k member, engine, and transmission. Engine bay and body will be painted next.

Also test fit the recaros. Still can’t believe how supportive and comfortable these are.

Engine, transmission and k-member should get removed today. Planning on some detail work while the engine bay is empty. Will update once the engine is out.

Engine, transmission and k-member are out. I forgot that some things on this setup are difficult to access. It really is 10lbs in a 5lb bag. But all in all it wasn’t bad. About 6 hrs start to finish.

Now time to strip the engine bay. Also to going to open up the harness and remove all the unused wiring.

That engine sure is pretty!

Thanks. Too bad most of it is unseen once installed.

Are you going to CTC this year with that car? We should start a caravan. I'm definitely going this time, provided I don't end up with water in my oil.

I'm not sure. Bad memories from the last time this car was there. I'll decide which car goes as it gets closer.

Engine bay just about stripped. Only a couple items left.

Then degrease, prep and mask.

Got two good weather days coming up, Sunday and Monday. Hoping to paint the shell. I’ll take off work if I have too.

This by far is the biggest hurdle. Once it’s done I can reassemble and the car movable again.

Then it’s just prepping and painting the rest!

What a long weekend! Spent 6hr prepping and removing the last bit of parts on Saturday. Then after 4 hrs of masking Sunday morning. It was finally time to spray.

First coat of base was going on nicely, then my baggy paint suit touched the rear quarter when I was reaching up and over to paint the upper hatch jam. I was so mad. First time I’ve made that mistake. It was a fairly large spot. Knowing I’d have to let the first coat dry and sand it out. I just buried that spot with more paint and finished the first coat.

After waiting 45 min for the first coat to dry, went out there and sanded that spot smooth. No problem, sanded out quickly and easily. Tacked it real good to gather up all the dust and put on the second coat.

5 total coats of base, three coats of clear, and a 10 hr day; the hardest and most time consuming portion of this is over!

Again, the phone doesn’t pick up the color well. It doesn’t look like nuclear glowing orange in person. This color has metallic and pearl, so it really flops depending on the light source. Plus it seems to glow while the clear is wet.

Some pics after the clear dried. You can see how the glow is fading.

At this point, I wanted to find out if the body matched the hood and fender extension I painted a few weeks ago. Perfect match! This also will give you idea of what the color will look like.

Next up. Take care of a few runs in the clear and do a final cut and polish. Then replace the windshield, delete some wires out of the harness and prepare for install of the engine and front suspension.

Also, compared to that metallic silver used on my friends cars, this paint sprays much much easier. Very forgiving.
