Progress Thread 67coupe’s 89 LX - Dyno Vid

I knew the clear had some runs in it but didn’t know how bad till I started wet sanding yesterday. I put it on so thick, unbeknownst to me, that I had to basically block the whole car. What a pain!

This is my first time using Axalta (DuPont) clear. It continues to flow out after it’s on the panel. Very different than Nason’s clear. Nason kind of stays put when hits the panel.

At any rate, after 12 hours, I’m pretty damn happy with it.

Going to paint trim black on the B pillars tomorrow. Then replace the windshield and finally work on getting the engine back in.

Thanks. That’s what started my whole venture into painting. Had a 2000 tahoe with 200k miles. Mechanically, it was perfect. The paint was awful. Got a quote from a friends shop for $4300!!! The truck wasn’t even worth that. I said I’ll try to paint it myself for that price.

Got a long way to go. Need to paint the:

Doors (inside and out)
Hatch (under and top)
Under side of the hood
Fenders
Bumpers
Spoiler
Cobra Kit

Got the b pillars painted today

Next up is windshield. Then put the engine bay back together.

Took today off to make this a four day weekend (Mondays a holiday for me).

Made some significant progress. Got the the old windshield out.

Good thing I wasn’t trying to reuse it. It cracked a few times while using the removal tool.

Got the pinch weld cleaned up and test fit the new glass

Then applied the primer and urethane adhesive and set it in place.

Then installed the top and side trim!

I’m pretty excited about the new windshield. The old one was sandblasted. Saw over 200k miles and had two large rock chips.

Next up is some drivetrain mods while it’s out of the car. First up was the clutch. The current clutch is a centerforce dual friction and even through it hasn’t been installed very long. It’s already slipped and smelled a few times. Since I’m adding more power with the Whipple, now was the time to address it.

New flywheel came with a twin disc clutch setup. Here’s the build up of the clutch.

And bolted and torqued to flywheel.

Next up is re-shimming the 26 spline input shaft. It’s slowly gotten louder since I put it in a few years ago.

After that some wiring delete and start installing bits and pieces in the engine bay. Then install the whipple once the upgraded intercooler arrives.

I soo feel better about having to buy valve adjusting shims on the 2 Jz......all I have to do is check in with every other major engine swap thread...
For all the non Windsor swappers,....were all in the same boat....if it isn’t a Windsor, open your wallet.....
Its the price to not be one of the herd....and not have to tell each other how your ford blue is slightly darker than their ford blue..
Which is lighter than the other guys ford blue...

And just think about how big that support would be if you’d kept to the engine family that it originally has in it...talk about bow ties.
 
I wanted to do a Termi swap prior to my 347, but just didn’t have the available funds for the setups I found. It’s getting to be much more rare than Coyote swaps, and I personally like the sound of the 4.6 over the Coyote as well. (Not that the Coyote sounds bad)

I’m pretty sure the coyote doesn’t have the 13726548 firing order that the 5.0 and 4.6 have. That firing order contributes greatly to the “Mustang sound” we all know and love.

When I bought this kit, the deal I got wasn’t far off from a built 347 and TKO500 setup. The terminator setup was stronger had more room to grow. That’s the only reason I chose it.

Agree. The terminator sounds better. But, it’s hard to argue against the power and performance of a PD blown coyote.

Finally got the transmission input shafted re-shimmed and installed. Turned into a pain and took most of the day.

First I had to figure out the best and easiest way to hang the transmission vertical. Some convenient tabs on the case housing allowed me to hang it from an engine hoist.

Then checked end play.

Measured btw 0.004” and 0.005”. Spec is 0.000 to 0.002”

Pulled the front of the case off.

A 0.037 shim was behind the bearing. Swapped in a 0.041. Bolted it back together and measured a very tight 0.001. Re-assembled with rtv and checked one final time. No change. Right in the middle. Good to go.

Installed bellhousing and starter and tried to install transmission.

After 3 hrs of trial and error. Finally got the input shaft engaged into both clutch discs and into the crank pilot.

I couldn’t imagine trying to do this in the car. Trying to engage a 26 spline input into 2 sets of clutch discs was not fun.
