Wow!!!!!

That is a really really nice color choose you have there. Can't wait to see if all put together.

Some more progress and some setbacks. One of them major.

The top of the hood and hatch are painted. Going to have to redo the hood. The metallic base is not even. The lighting in the shop basically hid the one bad spot.

Front bumper and cobra spoiler are painted. These came out flawlessly. Except for the one bug that flew into the last coat of clear on the bumper.

We’re proud of the bumper. This is what we started with.

Hard to see in the pic, but we had to use 3m plastic bondo to fill quite a few places. Although it was hard to work with, hard to argue with the results.

Some shots of the hood. Hard to take a photo showing the uneven metallic, but you get the idea.

Now for the major setback. We tried to paint the body yesterday but ran into multiple issues. Runs in the sealer, runs in the base and the same uneven metallic finish in places. Had to stop. Couldn’t put clear on it.

Pretty sure why we have the runs and the uneven metallic. After doing some research, I had my gun set up to spray way too much material. Once we figured this out, the next couple of coats looked flawless. The roof is still an issue. I’m pretty sure I dry sprayed trying to get an even finish before I realized the gun was so far off.

Oh well. We knew this would be a learning curve. Will pick up some more base and try again next weekend. The passes I made after adjusting the gun looked fantastic.

Dave, what should we sand the base with? The data sheet says 400 but we think that’s too course.

Yeah, 400 would be crazy heavy.

If you want to use sandpaper, nothing heavier than 1000 over base coat unless you have clear base coat to spray first, then 800. If you were shooting a solid you could go down to something like 500, but you're not. The metallic flakes will stand on end in the heavier scratches.

Though I would just use grey scotchbrite pads myself and thoroughly scuff it. Maybe use 800 on a block to cut out the runs, then back over those areas you cut them out with 1000 grit. Check for dirt nibs while you're there.

Haven’t updated the thread in a while due to more issues with the hood. More on that later.

At least everything is now painted but the hood and shell.

Even got trim black on the window frame and b pillar.

We tried the hood....again. And agin we screwed it up. This time we managed to get even coverage (no striping or blotchiness), but due to too many mist coats, the metallics are way too strong.

Talked to a few painters, including stangnet’s resident expert @Davedacarpainter, and every one of them was unanimous. We’re laying it on way to thick. Oh well, this is my first time shooting metallic. Going to try the hood again tomorrow. This time spraying much thinner and even coats.

I know it’s been a while, this paint has flat out beat us down. The hood and roof (large horizontal surfaces) have been really difficult to get even coverage without striping and dry spraying.

I bought a legit paint gun, painted a bunch of spare parts for practice, and even went to a slower reducer.

We finally got the hood to look respectable. It’s not perfect, but it’s well beyond passable.

We then went to paint the shell for the final time. Again the roof gave us issues. Frustratingly, we still had some dry spray in spots. I was able to dust coat it at the end to get an even look.

The strength of the metallics on the roof do not match the sides of the car, but there is a smooth transition to the pillars. The good news is everything else matches all the parts we’ve previously painted (cobra kit, front and rear bumpers, hatch, fenders).

It’s definetely good enough to call it good. It’s the best I’m able to do. But I am a little iratated. Now matter what I did, I couldnt get the hood or roof to cover evenly with out dusting it, which really made the metallics stand up.

Dave, thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. Thank you for for taking time to consult us. You’ve defintely helped us along the way. Is cheaper base coat (Nason) more difficult to spray than the more expensive name brands? Only curious cause I’m considering a new color for my car.

At any rate, for two amatures and a garage paint job, it’s beyond good enough. We’re both happy with it. Just trying to figure out what I’m missing. Those guys on YouTube make it look easy.

Well, we cut and buffed the roof today, and all I got to say is, we’re totally pleased with the results. How it looked in base had me worried. And it looked even worse when putting the clear on. But after sanding it flat and polishing, we are completely satisfied.

We also installed the gas door. It’s a perfect match. The gas door was kinda of our gold
standard. It had the metallic effect we were going after and we used it to compare all the smaller parts we’ve painted. This confirms that everything else we’ve painted will match.

Tomorrow we’ll cut and buff the rest of the car and the hood. Then we’ll start putting this thing together!

Looking good 67Coupe. Im glad its coming out well for you. I like that color, I had a vert that color. Loved it!

Unfortunately, we sanded through chasing a fairly large dust nib.

It’s right below the passenger side quarter window. Guess we’ll have to learn how to blend.

We stupidly tried to fix the sand through the quick way...and made it way worse.

Here it is after sanding down our rediculously stupid attemp. Looks pretty bad.

After watching some videos and asking local guys for advice, this is what we did.

Because our sanding left a low spot. We put some 2k primer over it. Then sanded it flat.

Then covered the primer with base. Tried my best to soften the transition at the edges.

At this point most paint shops would blend the clear. I was tempted to give it ago till some painters (@Davedacarpainter included) informed me that eventually, the blend spot will show back up. Said the proper way would be to clear that entire panel. For us that would mean clearing the entire body shell...again.

After working on this thing tirelessly for almost 6 months and having it damn near perfect, we decided to to fix it right.

We sanded all the clear and taped it up again, leaving only the A pillars, roof, C pillars and quarters.

Then shot the whole thing clear.

I’m extremely happy with how it turned out. Very glad we chose to fix it right. I’d hate to put all this work into a paint job, only to have a blend spot show up down the road. Time to enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend and relax.

Im glad you did it the right way man, especially after all the work you put into it. Unfortunately on these cars, you have to do the roof and other quarter when you paint em. Nice job.
