68 Vinyl Roof

I've had my car about 6 years now. When I bought it, I was told the black vinyl was original to the car, I've got the build sheet proving it did have a vinyl roof. It was also noted that mine has a single seam in the middle of the roof, instead of two seams near the outside edges of the roof. Anybody know if the single vs the double seam was more rare or unusual? Thanks.

I guess I have never really noticed the seams on other vinyl tops. I just figured they were all like mine. Mine has 2 seams. I'm sure I will start noticing now though.

I have never heard of a comparison made before or certainly any breakdown by production numbers. Where are you getting your comparison from? Your build sheet actually calls out "single instead of double"? If truly original does your car still have the center seam? Have you seen other original tops that have 2 seams instead? It could be several factors, like one is actually a replacement top or non stock replacement. If you are sure that both are originals then it could be the process used by different factories, say a difference between Dearborn built cars vs. San Jose. It could even be an oddball customer request, but I doubt that.

So your build sheet actually calls out single instead of double?

No, it just says black vinyl roof, not the type of seam. I was told by the previous owner that its the original top and since I haven't seen any others with a single seam, I'm curious about it. Thanks.

Well, I have to say that I doubt there are many other cars out there with their original vinyl tops besides yours, so that may be why. All the others could be replacements (probably even the 2nd or 3rd one) and the repro's may have a different seam arrangement. These tops usually crack fast or the roof beneath gets a problem and every 10 years or so they have to be replaced. This will indeed be a tough nut to crack for sure unless alot of other vinyl top owners who have had their cars for a long time or at least know the history, chime in.
