70-73 9" IN A 67 COUPE

Has anyone replaced a factory 8" with a 9" out of a 70-73 Mustang? A guy at Old Dominion Mustang in Ashland VA said it will be a direct bolt in if I get a 5" offset on my rear rims. Am I being mis-guided? The reason I ask is because I cant find a bolt in 9" around here. Ive got $1,000 to spend on the rear end and I need to have a posi unit. Any suggestions?

I can't answer your question, but since you are in Newport News I'd ask if you tried all of the old junk yards along J. Clyde Blvd near the York County line. I've also heard there's a big Mustang junk yard, both late model and older, in Cheasapeake called Johnson's Mustangs or somethign like that. I've never been there but supposedly its pretty big - they advertise on local tv.

I forgot - there's also a yard out near Zuni on route 460 called All American motors I think. When I was looking to buy stang I ran into this yard. The owner told me they like to buy classic stangs, fix them up, and sell them. If they don't have a rear end for you, they might be able to tell you who might have something in the area.

Hope that helps!

Sorry 71-73!

Johnsons is out in Chesapeake. I called him and he wanted $650 (I dont want it that bad) which is going to put me over budget. I work at a local dealer and I called the ones on rt17 and no one had one. Just ones for full size trucks. Ill try All American. Thanks!

Minus the brakes and axles, the '65/'66 8-& 9-inch housings are 52¼" wide. The '67-'70 housings are 54¼", and the '71-'73 housings are 56" wide.

All the above share the same 43-inch center-to-center distance on the spring perches.

Thanks! Great info! :hail2:
It sounds like I can use one out of the 71-73. I just wounder if anyone has actully done it and what kind of back space on the rim or is it worth narrowing.

You can usually buy the 71 thru 73's cheaper than the 67 thru 70. I know a guy close to me that will narrow one for $100 but that's not doing you any good. It looks like 1 more inch of back spacing on each side would do the trick.

I would think you would need more like 5 3/4 to 6" b.s. Do they even make wheels with that much?

If a 4 1/4 bs rim will fit than one inch would be 5 1/4. I was thinking though, what it would look like if the front rims were deeper than the back. Maybe I can fit a 7" rim on the front and 8" rim on the back if that would take care of that.

Ahh - good luck!!!

I've got a 73 9" in the back of my 67 coupe. I'm running wheels of a 99 v6 and they tuck in almost perfectly. if anything they could be spaced out about 1/4" each side, but i think they look good the way they are.
