Hey guys,
I have a 5 speed 98gt with the following mods: 3.73 gears, CAI, exhaust (was on when I got the car, not exactly sure what kind), tri-ax short throw shifter, lowered, strut tower braces

Got a little extra cash and I am trying to decide on some new bolt ons. It's looking like either getting UDP's with upper intake plenum and 70mm TB or UDP's with PI intake manifold. Looks like about the same cost for either combo but the PI intake manifold would obviously be more of a hassle to intstall. What would you guys get? Thanks for the help.

PI intake manifold and PI cams. They will provide the best bang for the buck on a NPI stang (can be had for under $300 including installation hardware, and will provide a nice 20-30 bump in HP). If you want even more power, get a set of MHS stage 2 NPI cams along with the PI intake. That should really wake your car up. The plenum and TB are useless mods at the current level of your car. The restriction is in the intake manifold and the cams, not the plenum and TB.

If you do cams and intake manifold, then a tuner would be the next logical mod.

Thanks for the help. Only problem is I have little mechanical experience besides basic bolt ons and I am a little nervous trying to install the cams myself. Also, where could I get the intake and cams at that price? $300? Anyone have a clue how much it would be to have them installed?

Then buy the complete PI heads with the PI cams in them already?

Seriously though, the NPI motor is holding you back.....get rid of it.

Well my car has 137,000 miles on it so I will probably replace it with a PI motor from a newer mustang in a year or so. I just wanted to play around a little bit until then without going crazy and wasting a lot of money. Of course if the plenum and TB is complete worthless junk I may just wait until I get the new motor before I do anything. I was considering those because they could be transferred to the new engine down the road. The intake manifold I think I can handle, seems like a decent mod for the price without too much hassle. But when I start thinking about cams and heads, I just dont want to get too much deeper into the engine if its going to be replaced later anyway. How much with the intake plus UDP you think? 15hp or so? I like the the idea of the UDP giving some torque and the intake or plenum + TB giving some top end HP.The UDP is def happening, I live in Louisiana and have to keep my AC on full blast all the time, which sucks the power and gas like crazy.

It's not that difficult. There are a couple of really good write ups on the internet. You'll need a helper to install the cams. I have no mechanical background and installed them without issue. You don't need to remove the heads either which is nice.

You don't need the entire PI top end either. You'll be almost identical to a 99+ GT with the PI intake/cam swap. Those that have swapped PI heads on the NPI short block pick up an extra 10 HP because of the bump in compression.

Honestly if did it all over again I would have installed some MHS stage 2 NPI cams instead of the PI cams along with the PI intake (would probably cost around $800). With that combo you'd have around 275 hp and more low end torque than a PI stang. NPI heads have much more PTV clearance so you can run cams with more aggressive intake centerlines.

137K miles... ssshhhh, that things just getting broken in. No point replacing the engine unless you're going for big power. In that case, I'd try to find an aluminum block out of an explorer (for weight savings), 96-98 cobra pistons, and PI heads. 12:1 compression FTW

Thanks man, thats some good info. You think 275rwhp from the stage 2 NPI cams and PI intake?? Thats pretty tempting. But yeah the car is in great shape so I think it will be around alot longer, just saw it roll over to 137,000miles and got me thinking. I might start looking around for an intake and cams now.

Yeah, 137k is nothing. Got 149k and still running strong. These motors will run a long time if maintained properly. I also have an f 150 , 4.6, with 240k miles on it, still running great.

I agree. Look into the PI cams / intake...
