73 factory tach installation

hi all,

i want to install a factory tach into my non-tach car..can anyone tell me what is involved ??

i have a MSD "ready to run" electronic distributor installed, but the manual does not show a tach output...it does NOT use the MSD ignition module..

once i find out where to hook up the wire, is there anything needed between that output and the tach ? or do i justrun the wire to the + side of the tach and then run the other wire to ground ??

i don't know if the tach even works, but i sure don't want to fry it hooking it up...

thanks

The factory tach goes between the ignition switch and the resistance (pink) wire in the main harness. Just don't try connecting the tach to the coil. That will destroy you tach instantly.

thanks, should i find a pink wire buried in the dash?? if not where would be the best place be to locate this pink wire ??

is there some way to test that it is the correct wire>?

also, is there any way to test the tach to know it works before installing ?

If you're using an MSD distributor you're going to need an MSD tach adaptor. I don't remember which one because I no longer own the car. To just hook up the tach you need a wire to ignition and a wire to the coil. That's how I hooked my tach before I got an MSD distributor and my tach wasn't destroyed. In the shop manual it shows the connection being between the ignition and the coil.
