78 ranchro to a 67 mustang

OK The other day i went to this guys house for a 351c for free but i would have to take his complete rolling body.
I did
Now comes that part where i have to install the rebuilt 351c with 20000 miles
on it. into my 67 mustang but i came to a lot of problems after i pulled the engine out i found the problems.

#1 I have a auto trans the bellhouseing will this fit to that 351c it came from a 302 ?

#2 would the 351c fit right into the 302's spot with out any mods or do i have to take the old ones from the racho?

#3 I noticed that the 351 had lots of smog regulation stuff on there how could i take them out without missing with the engine.

#4 I have hard that aftermarket headers for a 351c will touch the starter is this true?

Thats it for now i will have pictures of the cars later when i get home i am at the office now....

The bellhousing from the 302 will work fine with the 351 Cleveland. As long as your engine bay is big enough which the 67-68's are you can just drop it in. I don't know about the emissions stuff though never had any experience with it and the same goes with the starter clearance. Hopefully someone will chime in for you.

1: the bellhousing works fine.

2: the 351c not only fits in the same place as the 302, but you can even use the same engine mounts.

3: depending on the state you live in, you should only have to pass a somg test for a 67 model year vehicle. in california however, you hav eot integrate the smog controls of the engine, and the smog controls of the 67 chassis together.

4: there are swap headers available for putting the 351c into the early mustangs. if you do happen to run into a starter clearance problem, you can install a later model mini starter to solve the problem.

Are you sure you have a 351C and not a 351M/400M? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking Ford stopped producing 351Cs after 74. If it's a 351M/400M you'll need a the ranchero trans or other 429/460 C6 trans. You might want to check into it. Could be why it was free.

RacerX is right.
351C ended in 74. The 351 /400 M series is often mislabled as a Cleveland because they all share the same (minor diffs) heads for 2V motors. Ford never made factory 4V 351M/400 engines.
The bell housing will be for a 429/460 big block style trans (c-6 auto).
The crankshaft will also differ. Cleveland has 2.79" main journal size but M engines have 3.00"
Deck height is taller so engine is wider and thus intake manifolds will not swap either.
On the plus side, the heads alone are worh getting for free. They may have an "M" cast at one corner. 351C usually had a 2 or 4 cast in them to differentiate 2v/4v port/valve sizes.

There was a guy at WFC8 selling a set of adapter plates to put 4V 351C heads on a 315/400M and use a 351C intake. He was wanting $50 for the set.

Ok i check the engine and it has a m on one head and a 204 on the other
it has 8 bolt valve covers the water temp thing is on the block i will hav a picture later on today sorry i forgot yesterday.

351 m/c

All the 351m/c/400 have a dry manifold,temp sender in block.
There are 3 versions of a C-6. Since it is a one piece case without separate bell, Ford has them for small bocks, old FE big blocks(332-428) and new (series 385) big blocks(429-460).
Comparing small block 289/351C bell housing pattern to a 351M/400 pattern (which is same as new big block) it is easy to see the difference.
From Valve cover in photo it is obviously a 335 series engine(351C/M/400), but will take a little more digging to be positive. Unless someone did an engine swap in the past , I would put money on it being a 351M/400 based on the 78 year alone
