Ok, so if this is a 79 motor does that mean that its a 28oz engine? If so I need a 28oz flywheel and dampner right? Or can I have a 50oz flywheel and a 28oz dampner?

I need to find out what this engine needs as far as weights on the flywheel and dampner.

I have a late model front cover and it mounts up, a late model t-5 bellhousing and it mounts up....would this in turn mean that I have a late model engine and there for everything needs to be 50oz?

until sometime in '82, all 302's are 28 oz balance. You'll have to use a 28 oz balancer and a 28 oz flexplate/flywheel.

The 79 should have come with a timing cover that has the timing pointer on the pass. side, and will therfore require a water pump with a drivers side outlet. Be sure that the timing pointer location on the timing cover will be compatible with the marks on your balancer. Basically, the timing cover and balancer have to work together, it complicates things a bit when you have drivers side timing marks with a pass. side timing pointer. If you must mix and match, you'll have to find TDC and put some timing tape on the balancer to get the timing to work with the pointer being in a different location. Also, depending on the year of the other timing cover, it may not have a provision for a dipstick.

You just made my weekend! My cover has a passenger side pointer and I have a driver side water pump. I'm going to get a 280z balancer from fluidampnr and then do a march set up with serpintine! Now I just hope the clutch guy gave me the right flywheel. I told him it was a 79 302!!

The bellhousing has nothing to do with the balance weight of the flywheel. You DO have to be sure the tooth count of the flywheel matches the bell, in the case of the T-5 bell, you need a 157 tooth flywheel ( balanced for 28 oz/in)

Well, i had to measure the old flexplate, engine was originally had an auto tranny, that came off the engine and then the guy I got the flywheel from used that to give me the same sized flywheel but its 164 tooth. I also have a seperator plate from a Tfive and the bolt holes match up and everything but the only starter I have is from the straight six and have yet to put it on there to see if it will work.

Well , you've now got the wrong flywheel for a T-5 bell. Better send it back. The starter will not line up to a 164 tooth flywheel with a T-5 bell.
