79 mustang intake question

Well, now that you mention it, there are some very consistent bracket racers that use 2 barrels. The bigger Holley 2v can support some power, and, since it does not rely on the opening event of the secondaries, it is more consistent. Seen it in person and talked to the guy, who was, apparently, at least paying for his racing hobby with his car. Happened to be a 70 Duster 340 automatic car. I have thought about it but not likely to act on it.

Well it's a simple fact of building it for that purpose, something i guess not everyone understands, and like i said i'm not saying anything is supierior, just that it's possible. Take a 2800lb car that makes ~300rwhp and can cut a 1.50 60 foot time and you have an 11 second car, i don't care what carb it's running. It may not be knocking on the 10 second door but it's been done plenty of times. I believe Holley only make 2 barrels up to about 500cfm but that's box-stock carbs...you can have a carb shop build you just about anything you want, so even though there are only 2 barrels, doesn't mean it's flowing any less air than a 4 barrel. There are even single plane intakes for 2 barrels, not to mention addaptor plates for any intake that isn't available in 2 barrel form.

Well since you want to quote me ,where is this 11 second 2 barrel street car you talk of?If thats so why doesnt everybody looking for performance on a street car put 2 barrels on?Just asking for proof to back up your claims,thats all.If your so positive about your statements than please by all means show us.You say that a 2 barrel can perform the same as a 4 barrel,then contradict yourself and say they arent better .............what is it?

Now granted, i'm not saying they're better otherwise i would run one...i'm just saying there are classes that only allow 2 barrel carbs (or used to be back in the day) and there are ways to tune a big 2 barrel so that you have just as much air and fuel at WOT as any 4 barrel would, so in the long run it doesn't make any difference how many barrels you have. Make sense? Also a LOT of oval track classes only allow 2 barrel carbs. It's their way of limiting power...but still, what's the difference between a 600cfm 4 barrel and a 600cfm 2 barrel?

I quoted my initial response to you since you must be skim reading and are trying to make an argument out of nothing. If you don't understand the basic science of how a carb works and you can't understand that X amount of cfm equals X amount of cfm whether it's 4, 2 or 140 barrels, then this is a pointless argument as i may as well be debating the meaning of life with my 5 year old. I don't go around documenting the things i've seen and learned over the years for the purpose of proving to you something that you clearly do not understand. Get out, go to the track, spend more time in this hobby (with carbs) than you do on the internet and maybe you'll learn something.


I don't know why i'm bothering, but let me explain it again. We can use MY car as an example since you can't wrap your brain around concept without proof. Now, granted my car is not yet in the 11s...PLEASE cut me some slack, as i don't have an 11 second car sitting here to use for your example. To my defense, and God willing, with some suspension work, i will soon be knocking on that 11 second door...but Anyways, it's running what it's running with a manufacturer estimated 650cfm carb. If i were to have The Carb Shop or whoever build for me a race prepped 2 barrel, and that carb were capable of flowing a comparative amount of air and fuel, then there will be little if any difference in WOT performance. If the air and the fuel are being provided equally as compared to the 4 barrel, then the performance is going to be the same. Will it drive different on the street? Absolutely. Will the 4 barrel have better bottom end? More than likely since the 2 barrel will be tuned for WOT.


This is a basic supply and demand scenerio. It doesn't matter how many "barrels" you have, as long as the supply meets the demand of the engine. I'm speaking specifically about all out performance and now MPG or anything irrelivant like that which would only further derail this thread with meaningless debate.

Hey just for the record since we've totally destroyed this thread with you not knowing how carbs work and me trying to teach you and you being unwilling to learn....is YOUR car carbed or EFI?


Do you understand the difference of a carb running on primaries vs. secondaries vs. primaries and secondaries? And do you understand that a 2 barrel carb flowing the same cfm is equal to a 4 barrel running with primaries and secondaries open at the same time? Why is this so hard to understand?

so will the intake and carb be hard to change and what all do i need besides the intake and carb i buy to do the swap from the 2 barell to the 4 barrel thanks

just an intake gasket set. if you have an auto you may need a kick down linkage.

:Holley 1850 carb (600 cfm, electric choke), Edelbrock 5.0 performer egr intake, egr plate off a ford truck or aftermarket, Comp cams 268 H cam and Rhoads lifters = fun, big improvement, good idle, 23+ mpg on the highway and a WIDE power band. I had this set up until I spun a bearing at 150 K miles going down the highway.
