i have an 8.8 rear end out of a 88 mercury cougar xr7 in my 80 mustang, the tag on it read 3 S L 08 i know that meansit is 308 gears and the L means its a locker but what does the S stand for i've been searching all over and i havent found anything about it
if anyone could help me with this i'd appreciate it
thanks

It's an 8.8 with 3.08 gears and a Tracktion-lok differential. Also, it comes equipped with larger 10" drum brakes rather than the typical 9" used on most 8.8 rear ends that decade.

Pretty rare rear end actually.

It is possible.

A lot of the codes on the axle pertain to dates codes on when it was built. All my info shows it as a standard quad shock 8.8 with 3.08's and a t-lok. Only difference is the 10" drums.
