can you guess what tranny

iv recently purchased an 82 mustang. after taking it home i and doing some looking into it i found that it had a 2.3 litre from the factory that has now been replaced with a 5.0 and a three speed auto. how do i tell where and what the engine came from and what tranny is in it.

not for sure on the engine, but you could match firing order to see if its a 5.0 HO or something else like a towncar or crown vic engine

IIRC mustangs were the only cars with the 5.0HO?? maybe the t-bird had them too not sure

id put my money on the tranny being a c4, they're pretty decent auto trannies, identical to the factory AOD but with no OD band, and can withstand a bit more punishment than the factory trans.

again, not sure how to properly identify either, sorry

If it is a 3 speed, it is most likely a C4, but it could be a C6 or even an FMX, as I have seen all three.

Easiest way is to check the pan, and look up a trans id chart on the web somewhere. Most of the parts stores or places that sell trannies have these.

A C4 has a separate bellhousing, and a more or less square pan. A C6 is a one piece unit, and is physically much bigger than a C4. It would be near to hitting the floor if is a C6. Not that familiar with the FMx, as I have never had one.

The AOD is bigger than the C4, and is a one piece unit. It will accept some C6 internals. C4 and 6's have a vacuum modulator on the valvebody, and a mechanical kickdown lever. AODS have no vacuum controls.
