86 HO Cam Replacement

I need to replace the cam in my 86GT, one of the lifters developed a flat spot on the roller and the cam has a damaged lobe corresponding with the lifter. The engine is internally stock with high miles, but it runs strong and doesn't smoke (it still traps at 95mph in the 1/4 with the 2.73 grs and a best 60' of 2.33). For now, I want to replace only the cam and components to get the car going.

I'm looking for a good replacement SD friendly cam that requires none/minimal tuning and won't cause any drivability issues/minimal loss in fuel economy. Power gains are the least of my concern, however I don't want a power loss. I've read that Crower makes a nice peice, but 350 bones is more than I want to spend on a cam right now. Also, can I replace just the one lifter and be good to go? The other 15 are in very good shape.

That cam should work with no problems, but it isn't much better than stock, if better at all. I would just get a hold of another stock cam used if you can and replace your one lifter. Since everything is roller, you shouldn't have a problem just replacing the one and putting it back together.

You might want to replace the timing chain while you are in there.

Powered by Ford (FLorida) sells Crower cams for $260 and Summit will price match - the 15510 cam would be an excleent choice. Comp makes the XE264 which will also work. Put new springs on the heads or you might regret it if they have high miles.

I 2nd replacing your cam with another 86 cam. It's probably one of the best OEM cams to ever be put in a Fox. It's a shame about the monkey business they did with the heads.

I also 2nd replacing the timing chain. Mine a considerable/noticable amount of slop in it after 130,000+ miles.

As for the lifters... they're not that expensive. I can't see replacing just one while you've got it all torn down. You may as well replace them all.

It's a bit more money and TOTALLY a non-need but you might consider also putting a set of roller rockers in there. Just a thought for if you're planning to keep running that motor for a while. A replacement of ALL gaskets you can get to wouldn't be a bad idea either.
