hey all got my 87 a couple moths back for 500 needed mains and rod bearings got them all put it new gaskets oil pump the whole 9 everything but pistons and rods put it all bck together timimg is set at 12 btdc got it legal drove it to work a few times runs great! when cold....so i pulled distrubutor again thinking my timing was off put it back in with balancer set at 10 btdc button pointed at #1 on cap tfi was toward the ps pump and i got it started and still had to go all the way against the thermostat housing to get it to 14 btdc and the miss is insane pops and misses drives me crazy sometimes it shuts off at stop lights

87 speed density b303 gt40p heads motor came out of car before i bought it it ran good evem with needing bearings only thing i changed was i put the cam in it

Dump codes sticky

Look at the top of the 5.0 Tech forum where the sticky threads are posted. One of them is how to dump the computer codes. Codes may be present even if the CEL (Check Engine Light) isn’t on. You don’t need a code reader or scanner – all you need is a paper clip, or if your lady friend has a hair pin, that will do the job.
I highly suggest that you read it and follow the instructions to dump the codes. http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/threads/how-to-pull-codes-from-eec4.889006/

I stick my distributors in at tdc and then set timing,

Speed density cars don't respond well to cam changes, so that could be part of your problem.

As karthief pointed out, set the #1 cylinder to TDC, then insert the distributor and time accordingly. Sounds like you could be one tooth off with the distributor if you have to turn it that far to put it into time.

Did you time it with the spout connector pulled? If not, then you have that working against you as well.

As jrichker pointed out, pull your codes as well. There could be more problems than that, but those are what stand out just from what you've posted so far.....

Yes, or buy this

Amazon product ASIN B000EW0KHWView: https://www.amazon.com/INNOVA-3145-Ford-Digital-Reader/dp/B000EW0KHW

However, speed density, and a B303 cam aren't likely to play well together. You may need to start doing your homework with regards to a mass air conversion

No code 11 (two flashes when the computer dumps the codes)? A perfectly functioning system will always get a code 11, it is the everything is OK code. The 11 code is computer passed its internal self test.
If you don't get an 11, you have computer or wiring problems.
Please check and repost.

Bolt-in in Maverick. Sold brand-new Ford Motorsports 5.0L HO to a kid who put it in his 72 Maverick. I then did the peripherals, fuel pump, return line, O2 sensors, harness, etc. It ran beautifully! Smooth, powerful. Most rewarding venture. I had bought 6 of those engines, still have one in my shop awaiting whatever.....(driving now a '94 162K, but beautiful original Teal paint, that engine just might have a place after all. One of them was recently dumped into a '65 Galaxie by my nephew in MO (Marine Corps). Been helping him with that via long-distance..........imp

If you can make a '650 holley' run like a dream then efi should be easy peasy.
