Well for anybody who has done this before, any advice or tips would be great. I could also really use some headlight wiring diagrams for both the 86 GT and the 87 GT because the 86 put all the connections under the hood on one harness that plugs up under the dash, while the 87 dash harness includes alot of the under hood stuff up to the starting solenoid, and then has a plug for the headlights and whatnot. the colors aren't the same between the two, surprise surprise, and I'd rather not hack this one up too too bad.

Also the main wiring harness in the 86 has one wire that comes all the way across the dash and plugs into something down by the driver's side kickpanel. The 87 harness doesn't have this, or it's done a different way. I'm not sure what it is for. I know someone here has been nuts like me and done this before, lay your wisdom on me.

Thanks in advance,

Alright well I managed to figure out low beams, high beams, fog lights, parking lights, right run signal and left turn signal. I've found the horn wire and I think i know whch one it is on the 87 harness so I guess we'll see about that. For some reason 2 wires turn on the washer motor, a pink/yellow one and a black/white one.

And while I'm here asking questions. I've noticed that there is a huge mess of wire splicing coming off the alternator wire, and the alternator wire eventually hooks onto the hot side of the starter solenoid.

Is there any reason why I couldn't put the alternator directly to the hot side of the battery, and then take all these other annoying hot wires and put them all together on the battery side of the starter solenoid?

This just seems like a better way of doing things than having the battery just kind of sitting off to the side of the loop. But I defanently don't have alot of electrical knowlege/practice so I thought I'd ask.

Drop me an e-mail,, I put an 89 interior in my 86 and had the dash out last week and took a few pics of what mods I did to mount the dash..

Hardest part is the wiring.. I just swapped out both dash and engine harness and spliced the 86 plugs back on for the headlights. You also need to move the e-brake handle and make a few adjustments for the cable to connect, nothing major though, and make a few new mounting holes. Plus you will nedd the mount for the center console at the very back where the arm rest mounts too.

87-93 interior swap info....

did you have to do anything to swap the rear? or do all the holes just line up?

I take it you mean the IRS?
The only holes that line up are the front subframe mounts which bolt up to the stock torque boxes. Where your LCA's normally bolt.

no sorry, they were talkin about interiors, and i was refering to the rear 1/4 panels on the interior from a 87-93 going into an 85

Ah I see. Well for starters if you don't do the full 3/4 window swap the 87-93 rear quarters won't fit without some trimming. Because the full windows sit out further, the interior panels thusly stick out further. If you don't do the swap, you'll hafta cut back that section of plastic that sticks into the window cavity. I couldn't tell you how much. Mounting the window requires the punching of a hole, and some washers because many of the studs will only be "near" things to grab and not actually through any holes. Other than that, the front seatbelt has to be squeezed to fit through the slot on the quarters, but personally I had no trouble doing this with my hands. I found that the B pillar seatbelt bolts were slightly off alignment but close enough that I could make it work without any cutting. The rest of it went in for me with no problems. But take note, I used 87 pieces which are most similar to my 86 pieces. Later model years incorporated rear seat 3 point belts instead of simply lap belts. What yearh this happened i'm not 100% sure, and what problems it will create I am also not sure. The hatch cover is also slightly different, and I believe it is also actually in a different position or height or something. Again, it may or may not cause some kind of problem.
