88 GT outside door trim molding

I seen alot where people have gotten these off, but just wondering if anyone had trouble with the paint coming off the actual door from the tape pullng. My car had been repainted before about 10 years back (the moldings were painted seperate, then put on) and the paint is still pretty good shape, but the door moldings are nasty. I would like to get them off and replace them but dont want to end up painting a whole door also. I'm sure the prep work done on the previous paint job will have alot to do with the outcome, but would like to know otthers experiences....Thanks

Ever consider just masking the area off and repainting the mouldings while on the car?

One of the problems is the ends up by the fender are curling up so they really need replaced. They are reproductions, I read alot where they just dont work as well as the "Ford" ones do. Thanks for that suggestion though.

Never had a problem with them pulling the paint off. It seems to me that the curling issue is usually caused by the metal strips on the back. I always remove them. Once you clean them off (I had to use a heat gun to remove the metal strips and tape) lay them on a flat surface with some books on them to get them nice and flat.

The hardest part is keeping them straight when you paint them and apply them to the door. They will flex a lot and crack the paint. It helps to have a couple of friends to help you reinstall.

i would think that it would be alot better to tape them on the car and then paint so that you wouldnt crack the paint

You could do it this way, but there are reasons not to. The biggest thing is that it is a bit easier to wrap the paint on the edges with them off the car, which is important for the best result.
