I have just decided to fix up my 88 mustang gt 5.0 that has been basically sitting in my garage for several years. I would like to replace the alternator but need some information on exactly how to do that. Can anyone help? Thank you

Stock alternator - disconnect 1 big plug, 1 small plug, remove belt by putting a wrench on the idler pulley and turning counter clockwise until the belt loosens. Remove the 2 bolts that secure the alternator. Reverse proceedure to re-install.

I recommend that you buy a Chilton's or Haynes shop manual when you pick up the replacement alternator. You will need it in the future.

Welcome to the boards.

If you desire to upgrade to a 3G alternator, the wise gentleman who posted above has a post with great info on doing the upgrade.

Good luck.
