I followed this write-up when I installed mine.......................
http://svo73mm.cjb.net/

Yes, it's pretty much a direct bolt in. No, $300 is a rip! I sold one for $100 (yeah cheap, but he was a fellow turboforder and a good guy). $150-$200 is usually what they go for, especially here on the west coast.

Here's mine.....................

Thanks guys! It really wasn't that difficult. The motor and tranny were out anyway. I pulled the old 7.5 rear and put the whole car as high in the air as I could get it. I dropped the gas tank 'cause I installed a Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, so the undercarriage was fairly stripped. I pressure washed the whole underside and then coated it with a couple of cans of rubberized undercoating. I rebuilt the 8.8 before I put it in and simply scuffed the housing, springs, cover, brackets, etc with red scotchbrite pads and painted the pieces contrasting colors. Then I put it all back together, carefully!

having a 5lug TC 8.8 wouldnt affect how it goes it, it'll be the same except you'll have a 5lug wheel on each side instead of 4. so what's the width difference between the TC and 'stang rear? i have one sitting out back with a bent passenger side axle and i planned on just using the ring and pinion but if i was able to find a cheap axle, or a stronger pair, i'd just use it for a 2.3t swap. i just dont want it to look mexicanized by being too wide.

I believe that the overall width difference is 1.5", so you will be 3/4" wider on each side. Unless you're running really wide tires, you shouldn't have any rub problems.

Not sure about the 5-lug but the 4-lug fox body 7.5 axle housings are exactly the same width as the 8.8 housings. The 1-1/2" difference is in the axles. Simply remove the longer 8.8 axles and install the 7.5 axles. They bolt right in. Now you have a stronger 8.8 with 3.55 or 3.73 w/trac loc and stock Mustang trac width.
