Anybody ever have a problem with their car backfiring? I have a stock (K&N panel, off road h pipe and flows) 89 lx with 184,000 miles. Never had to do anything to it major; change the oil every 3000 miles, have the alt. rebuilt, new water pump, fuel pump, and minor tune up parts and brakes through the years. Over the past couple months, its started backfiring. It only does it when I past a car or anytime I run the rpm up (under a load, not with the car sitting in the driveway) to around 4500 - 5500 ( all this WOT), then press the clutch in to change gears and POW!!! Its load, and at night you can see some flame come out the tail pipe. I replaced the 02 sensors with some advance auto Bosch units ( I usually use Ford parts, but I went cheap this time, I figured they where made by the same company), this didn't help. Other than the backfiring, the car runs great; no skipping at any rpm, no hesitation, no check engine lights, same fuel milage, it runs the same as it ever has. I'm baffled. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks

Dump the codes first to see what the computer say's is wrong. Search for member "JRichker" and Codes to get the proper method for obtaining the computer codes for free and only requiring 5 minutes of your time.

Thanks for the info so far. I'll check for any codes, but I'm sceptical. I did have to replace my IAC a while back, I tried cleaning my old one, but it didn't help. I'll also check my timing, but the way it starts and its response have me sceptical on that aswell. Runs good. Thanks

Welcome to the boards!

A list of your combo and mods would help.

It is simply an overly rich transition from WOT to part throttle (during the blip of the shift). When the butterfly closes, the motor goes rich for a millisecond before it kicks in the decel strategy (the puter is supposed to be all over this dynamic, which is actually kind of involved. The IAC is supposed to open to feed additional air, the injectors dial back, etc).

But if someone is running overly rich, excess fuel hits the exhaust. And if there are no cats, that doesnt help with seeing flames or noise (hearing the backfires).

I agree with starting with codes. Even if the CEL is not illuminated, they can be stored in there (esp for a not-super-critical issue like you are seeing).

Good luck.

I would definitely check the Timing and Fuel System, and as listed above dump your Codes and then you should be able to find the source of your "After Fire".
