I was wondering how to tell if my 89 GT is a Cobra or not, I didnt think it was but when I went to get it registered they told me it is. Any help would be great.

Thanks

James

the fox mustang gt from canada was called the gt cobra. so if it was made in canada its a cobra. in the us the only cobra was the 93. hope this helps. you can google it or do a search for more info.

he's on the money w/ the trivia

One way to tell if any mustang is a Cobra is by looking at the Vin # number; Look closely at the Vin # because if it is a Cobra, the 12th figure in the Vin should be the letter "D". If you see that, then your car is a Cobra, but like a few others have already said, 1993 was the only fox body cobra.

yea you can probably check by the vin number, but i can answer your question now, NO its not a cobra, sorry, only cobra made was in 93, and like juicer said, if your in canada and purchased it there, it probably had cobra badges on it, so if your in canada and have the badges, technically its a cobra, but really.. its not...

and if your trying to distinguish it on a 93, it really isnt hard, theres alot of different body parts (ex. grill, front and back bumper, side skirts, badges, wheels, ext.)

if u classify a cobra as an svo or svt car then no its not a cobra, but like said before the canadian built fox was called a gt cobra.all in all u have a regular gt that just so happens to be called a gt cobra.

Said yet another way - only 93-95 Cobras carried the high performance parts that distinguished them from regular HO Stangs; the Canadian breed of 'Cobra' is differentiated only by cosmetic changes -- basically the same as an HO Mustang of the same year.

The way you see a cobra is the name.. A REAL cobra, would have an svt certificate, and also all the body, suspension, and engine features they do from the factory, not sure exactly what the canada cobras have i dont quite remember but i think it just has a few badges that say cobra.. dosent sound anymore special then a gt to me.

It cant be a cobra. Even if it was a Canadian cobra like Michael Yount said it is cosmetic only. There is nothing in the vin # to separate it from a regular GT. Is your spedo in kilometers ??

Yes there is, I have several friends with cobras and one of my dad's friends used to work at a Ford dealership, and he is the original owner of his 1993 Mustang Cobra and he has indicated that all mustangs that say cobra on them can be simply fakes, he has proven that if you look at the VIN, and the 12th figure of the Cobra is the letter "D" then you have a legitimate Cobra. If the 12th figure is not a "D", and the mustang indicates that it is a Cobra, it is a guaranteed fake Cobra. A lot of people buy Cobra conversion kits and say it is a Cobra, but it is really just a GT with Cobra looks, it is not legitimate. There are no mustangs with the VIN having a letter "D" as the 12th figure except all Cobras.

I understand that. The cobras were only made in '93. He is asking about an '89. No such thing as an '89 cobra.

Oh I know that, I was just pointing out one way to determine if a mustang is a cobra or not. Even if he did look at the VIN of his '89 the 12th figure would not be the letter "D" which would show him that it is not a cobra and never will be because Cobras were first manufactured in 1993 like me, you, and everyone else has indicated. I see where your coming from and I hope you see where I was coming from. Thanx.

As stated before, the Canadian Cobras were actually GT's with the '80-'81 Cobra decal on the rear spoiler. As for the Fox bodied U.S. Cobras, 1979 was the first time they were made and were also produced in '80 and '81. Ford then went 12 years before introducing the '93 SVT Cobra.
