9 in housing

My boss has a 9 in housing that he wants 50 bucks for. He said he has a set of axles that he would get rid of too and I think that he said that they are 28 spline. Now it is a small bearing housing too. What kind of cost would I be looking at to build it? What gearing should I be looking at for a turbo set up with a T5 tranny? I dont know the width of it and if it would need to be cut down to fit my 65. If I had it cut could I have the tubes changed to a big bearing? Should I just pass it up and find something better?
 
If you have to shorten it you will need new axles since you can't respline 28 spline axles. If it is the right width what is the bolt pattern on the axles? If you have to shorten the rear end I would wait for one that will fit the car. I have heard others say that 3.25 are a good gear for turbo cars. I have 3.70 gears and now wish I would have went with 3.50 gears for my blown application. As far a small or big bearings I don't think it would make much difference with what you have planned.
 
so he said that it is 54 1/4 flange to flange. came out of a late 60s cougar. My 8 in out of my 65 is 53 1/4 if I am measuring the same as he did? Is an extra inch that big of a deal. You are talking a half inch longer on either side.
 
That would be a good rear end housing to have for someone like me with a late '60s Mustang.

Yes, it will make a difference. I had a '65 Mustang that someone put a '67-68 8" under and the rear tires were a lot more prone to rubbing the fenders. Now I have a '68 with a '57 narrow housing and the rear wheels sit just far enough under the car to be a little noticeable. Sure you can get wheels with ½" more backspacing, but that will probably rule out being able to rotate the tires.
 
I would take it if it is only 1" wider and when you buy wheels get the backspacing you need. Is it a problem for you to not be able to rotate tires? If so just get non-directional tires and swap left to right and not front to back. Not a true tire rotation but it would work.
