This Spring I went to start my 92 fox for the first time since September the previous year. It wouldn't start with the key. I was however able to start it by arcing a screwdriver across the starter solenoid studs. After starting it like that for a few months I finally got tired of looking ghetto. So I did some research and replaced the ignition switch. It still won't start with a key.
When I turn the key, I noticed a beep from my MSD-6AL. When I did some research on that I found a lot of people experiencing this beep were installing their ignition and trying to turn it over for the first time. My setup, however, has functioned previously.
My primary question is this: since I can start the car by shorting the studs on the starter solenoid and run it for hours, what can I rule out? I'm not an electrical guru on these early EFI engines but it's obviously not the distributor, plugs, MSD ignition box, starter, or wires so I'm hopefully looking at a cheap fix. I'm thinking it is the starter solenoid itself. But can I rule out the coil? Anything else I can rule out? Thanks.
