ok read all the others that had overheating problems thought I would ask anyways...

stock 5.0 stk cam, stk headers, 5spd

strim, a/c, electric fan from summit, 2row alum rad. from lmr, 190tstat

runs great all day even in TX 98deg weather all untill a/c is turned on..
then it spikes the 270 mark....

I have a puller fan do I need to add a pusher in the front??

thanks for any and all help Gix

Does it run cooler while at speed?

if the a/c is not turned on its great you can run the hell out of it np.

but once the air is on it climbs up and will not drop even with heater on high..
even at highway speed no boost just stay's up at the 270 to 280 range...

Did this happen once you installed the fan?

If it runs hot at speed and you have the air dam under the car, it sounds like the radiator simply cannot reject enough heat.

You might find the pusher is more of an impediment to flow (esp since you have issues at speed) than it helps.

Since you run hot at speed (where the fan is not doing anything useful), you know you have another issue (like the radiator not rejecting enough heat, lack of air dam, bad stat, etc etc). I would focus on those things instead of the fan, which is not the issue (or the primary issue).

Lastly, be sure your gauge is reading correctly.

ok that sound right...

ok I put strim on and lost the race crank pulley, do you think the vortech crank pulley being stock size using the race set on the water pump could be pushing the water to fast through the radiator??

If I remember right they allways oversize the water pump pulley...

does anyone know the stock size water pump pulley??

does it drop to normal operating temp when you kill the ac after it jumps up with then engine running? If so what temp?

I would imagine your gauge is reading correctly if you've got a cold radiator and suddenly no heater on a hot engine

whoops

yea once the temp rises it does not want to drop..

this morning I drove it to work without a stat in... did fine then spiked, heater was working, I was trying to get rid of some heat... then there went the head gasket (nice cloud of white smoke )..... no water in oil at least...

this engine is not making sense never overheated once until a/c was installed.

oh well back to 306...

I would change the pump. Also is your fan going on the high setting when you kick on the A/C?

Your fan might have been pushed enough air for the motor prior to AC but after you put the AC on and had it running one day with it on, it may have been too much for he fan to handle. Perhaps the first time it overheated a headgasket started to leak and it wasn't apparent until it completely went. What CFM is your fan rated at ?

yea I think the over sized water pump pulley slowin down the flow plus maybe not enough fan did it in...
I got it home ...towed.. and it had water in oil so time for an engine swap back to the 306..

thanks for all the ideas and help guys

Why do you not require a reverse rotation pump?

So the problem was it had the regular v belt water pump on it in stead of the reverse rotation. Great you found it. I was going to say the fan was to small with the a/c on.
