92 T-Bird 5.0 HO Same as Mustang 5.0 HO?

I know this question has been asked many times, but I've got a guy offering to sell me a 92 Thunderbird with a 5.0 HO for $300 Canadian. It's got an 8.8" rear too, so that can go into my car. The car has 260 000 kilometres on it.

One of the mechanics mentioned that the read had "drive axles like a fwd". So I assume it has IRS?

Edit: Also, what kind of heads has it got? E7's?

Pretty much. It has E7TE's, hypereutectic pistons (like all '92-up HO's), and a different (t-bird/cougar/SN95-I think spec) front timing cover water pump front accesory package. Just swap your front dress stuff to it and you are good to go. Also swap your intake and stuff too.

The cam that's in it is also different, but in this case it's different in a good way. It should have the same cam as the '93 Cobra. Add the Cobra 1.7 rockers and you are good to go wit hteh same setup as a '93 Cobra.

Yes, the car has IRS.

I have a '93 T-Bird engine in my '90 Mustang. Had to swap it after a self induced mishap (dam tiny hose clamp!!), but I may be making the original engine into a 349 (.040" 3.40" stoker) and putting it back in the car.

V8 T-Birds came with a 28 spline 8.8" IRS. V6 cars had a 7.5" IRS. The standard trac-lok will drop right into the center carrier if it doesn't have it already.

Width. Mounting points. And the bolt pattern is 5x4 1/4"

Well, I'd rather have the solid axle for higher horsepower application anyway. Not that I have enough to break anything yet.

That rear IRS unit would be good for a Lincoln Mark VIII. It would do away with the often troublesome (as they get older) air bag setup they have. Plus the pump and control system could be removed to save some weight.

My bad. You are correct. The T-Bird engine may or may not have forged pistons. My '93 Bird engine has hypers.
