i picked up a 93 mustang lx 5.0 last year.car was automatic aod. the guy said it only had the ford motorsport headers, gt40 intake, exhaust and 24lb injectors. Car still had factory 19lb maf. I picked up a used 24lb mass air for the car put it on. Swaped a 5spd in it, car is still running on auto ecu.
The car wont hold timing. 10-18deg the car wont even start. Sit it anywheres from 18 to 25 and give it gas it breaks up backfires from the intake. Timing is sitting on 30 it starts moves but right after 3000rpm it breaks up, sputters, pops, cuts out.
The orginal owner didnt say anything about it being cammed but u can tell by the sound of the car that it does have a cam. Even my friend with a 11sec 331 says he knows it has a cam. Im new to ford power i come from a honda background. We took the frontend off the motor put a new chain and gears on it timed it up right and still wont run right. I dont know where to go next

car has new autolite 25's gapped at 45, ford 9mm wires, new dizzy, new ignition module, new chain, new gears. msd coil

a couple ideas

the computer has to match the car to the tee.it would have to be an ecu for a 5 speed not an automatic.that could be one problem.another one might be the shorting plug(spout connecter).its connected to the ignition module harness where it plugs into the module.little square plug.you also have to pull it out while youre setting the timing.set the timing with the spout connecter unplugged at 10 degrees and then reinstall the plug.it advances the timing 10 to 20 degrees on top of the 10 degrees you have it timed at.if you set the timing at 20 degrees with it installed, then youre technically running 30 to 40 degrees of timing which will cause big problems just like youre describing.it could actually be slapping valves and pistons together bein timed so high cause advancing the timing fires the spark plug earlier than normal and it would cause your car to be building up too much cylinder pressure(very high compression)detonation!!!!!

for the timing we do pull the spout out when we time it, my dad does the timing im thinking about getting it done by a shop. the timing just wont set anywheres unless its high, any possibility the dizzy could be spun 180out?

how should i go about dumping the codes. just a jumper wire on the harness?

OMFG, you picked up somebody's po-ject!

I was going to suggest either the distributer could be a tooth off, it could be a bad distributer pickup, it's really hard to tell. I had a similar issue and it was the pickup inside the distributer was loose (the plactic borke as I recall) and then one night it broke and I was on foot from that point forward.

Check the coil, module, and then the pickup unit inside the distributer.
