Today i took my sn95 for a ride after experiencing some surging issues car ran like crap till it warmed up while running badly i noticed the fuel pump was whining very loud and could be heard over my exhaust from 30 yards away. The car runs strong on acceleration without sputtering or hesitation ehxaust smells strong of gas ?????? smog pump bypassed cats were cut from previous owner refilled with 89 octane 2 days ago first time driving since then

I'd say your pump is heading South...all you should hear is a faint noise when its running. Today she runs, tomorrow she don't... may wanna get on that before you get stranded...

If your smog stuff is gone then your gonna get some extra stink, specially without cats... youll get used to it...

Pull # 1 plug, as its an easy one and see what the plugs look like...maybe its running rich and thats some of your stink. You can get on it hard to and see if its puffing a Black cloud... another sign of being rich..

The noise is usually an early sign of failure. If it smells like raw gas, make sure it's not leaking from somewhere first.

My pump isn't as loud as his, but I can hear it while sitting at idle from inside the car, and you can hear it quite easily from 10 feet away outside. I've read that the stock fuel pump on a 94 can be loud, but I've never heard any pump THAT loud before. Replace it?

I just don't want to end up finding out that the noise is normal and I've replaced a fuel pump with another noisy one.

From what I remember mine was pretty loud when the key was turned on the first time. Would be while it's priming of course. Then got quieter, I think I could still hear it a little though

My pump is loud as heck. I dont have a back seat or a seat delete, so im unsure if that makes a difference.

My fuel pump is loud as all get out as well...

Easily heard in the car at idle with the radio off...its a stock replacement that was intended to cure the incredible volume of the original, that has the exact same volume as the one it replaced...

Your situation, though, seems a bit different...

Mine has ALWAYS been loud...

It seems as if your has BECOME loud recently...

If it has suddenly changed in volume then I agree that it would be wise to get a new one...for the price, it is sure better than walking, and the only real way you will ever know if it is going to die is when it dies in the parking lot at the store in the rain with a full tank of gas...

You do know that they always go out when the gas tank is full, right?

Problem is, I don't know if the fuel pump has always been loud, or if it's a recent development, since I bought the car this fall. I'm probably going to end up replacing it with a new one just so I can have the peace of mind that I won't end up stranded somewhere, even if a replacement is just as noisy.

The fuel pump is loud in the 1994. Mine can be heard easily at idle. One way you can tell if the pump is going bad is how quickly it responds to vacuum changes, e.g. when the brake pedal is mashed. If it sounds lethargic in changing, your are going to suffer a side-of-the-road experience at some point. The noise can be effected by many things, the least of which is a cracked or leaking seal on the top of the fuel tank where the pump mates to the tank.

This problem sounds like an electronic issue to me. I have had bad pumps before and YOU KNOW IT. It will feel like you are running out of gas intermittently and when you are foot-to-floor, the car will feel like you are trying to drive through lake Michigan. Plus, if it smells like fuel... hmmm. Could be anything from return lines, to tuning, to a bad sensor. Check codes. I know that Autozone will tell you that the car has to have the check engine light ON when you go to them, but the OBDII will 'store' codes. Start there.

94 is OBD1 so that's not gonna work

Mine was loud when i bought my car... gave out a few months later. Your on time bomb status... id replace for piece of mind. Walbro 190 i have now still whines a bit but not nearly as loud...

*Update*

It turns out that my super loud fuel pump was on the edge of failure.

The pump started dying on me this weekend while I was going up a mountain. I managed to eventually get to my fiance's cousin's house about 10 miles away to replace the pump, but only after being stranded on and off for a few hours on the interstate.

I bought a stock replacement from Advance and it's much, MUCH quieter. I can still hear it prime when I turn the key, but it's very quiet, I can't hear it while driving, and it's not EMBARASSINGLY loud.
