Is there any point to having the timing on anything but 10 degrees if you're not using a aftermarket chip? I hear that if you advance the timing to say 17 degrees the computer will just pull timing back to 10.

Is there any truth to this?

Chris

What you speak of happens with fuel ... not spark

What happens when you add spark by twisting the dizzy is you add
spark on a global basis

Spark gets added to all cells in all load rows in the spark table

Good for some conditions but bad for others

i have no chip and have advanced my timing to 12*. i have felt some performance gain. with that timing i need to run mid grade fuel and i do get some pinging with 87 octane. others will set there timing at 14 but need to run 91 octane. there is a performance gain even with a stock engine. that said, cars are different you may be able to to run 14 where i can run 12. try it and see. if you get pinging back it off a deg or 2

I have a 383 stroker in there now with no check engine light. No chip either. Not really sure where to set the timing at. but 10 degrees isnt it. Wasnt sure if the 94/95 computer would try to pull timing if i tried advancing it too much. I know this wasnt a problem with the pre 94 cars.

base timing is 10*. to change the base timing you have to pull the spout connector or the puter will undoo what your are trying to do. you won't even get a steady timing reading without pulling the spout.

Yeah i know about the spout. I'm just wondering if the computer will notice the timing isn't 10 degrees and start pulling timing after the spout goes back in.

As wise ol' Mr Grady said, the EEC has no clue where your timing is set. It just assumes where you set it is zero (baseline) and works from there.

And you can change your timing with the SPOUT installed [without the EEC undoing your work]. You just can't tell where you set it till you pull the SPOUT and check it again.
