94 mustang gt - heads ...can't decide

okay, i still planning out my h/c/i swap...

orginally i was planning w/ this setup cobra intake (ported), gt40 heads (ported), and steeda 19 cam.

but...i dont want to regret getting the gt40s later down the road...so now im considering stepping up to afrs 165s or 180s...w/ a trick flow intake ....or maybe even trick flow heads too....but i heard afrs are better?

so my question is...are trickflows or afrs worth the extra almost 800$ bucks???

long term plans for this car are..... h/c/i 4.10 gears, no boost, 100 shot (400hp w/ the juice)

You really can't go wrong with either AFR, or TFS heads. Being able to run a 2.02 intake valve and the cost difference sold me on the TFS heads. Down the road, I have plans on more displacement and didn't want to spend the money twice, or have additional machine work done, to gain the flow required, to feed 331+ cubes. I couldn't have run the AFR 185's on a stock shortblock without flycutting the pistons, so that made the decision easier.

I too plan on Trickflow heads for the same reason. You cant run AFR 185's on the stock short block without machine work being done on the stock pistons. AFR 165's would work, but I think the Trickflow heads have more potential than the 165's. The GT40's would be a nice step up from stock, but I would save for TF or AFR personally.

i agree... if u got a few bucks to spend definitely buy some TFS or AFR... IMHO, TFS are great for the price, as well as what both Nick and Matt said. i personally bought a set of TFS heads to put on hopefully this spring

if money is the issue then there is no better head for the money than tfs. but if you just want the best with no regrets then its afr all the way.347 mild cam a tad larger than the stage 1 tfs and 185's with rpm2 intake and supporting boltons it made 360 to the tire.i haven't seen tfs do that .not without a much larger cam and spinning it to the moon.the trick flow factory turns out some nice heads but not quite as good as afr.that was my buddies motor.ill post my numbers when i finish the build.347 with 10.8 to 1 afr185 with tfs2 cam ported 95 cobra intake and all the other normal bolt ons should be real torquey.

o yea..that will be real nice...hope u have a nice suspension with that setup...or you will have major traction problems!!:D

Application and Long Term plans really need to be considered here :Word:

If you are gonna stay NA
If you are gonna stay with the OEM sb

Then ... Yes ... TFS or AFR ... They are worth it IMHO

I've been very happy with my AFR's :nice:

You can run ped rockers with the AFR's
but
I do prefer stud mount

Now ... about the OEM offerings ......

If you don't sink too much money in em :nono:

then

You can always sell em for about the same price you gave for em if you
wanna step up to a better flowing head for more power later on ;)

If you think you might go to a blower ........
I'd stick with OEM iron heads and let the blower do its thing :D

About that OEM Cobra intake and that soft Steeda 19 cam

Have you considered the TFS kit?

You get a better intake AND cam

Many have done that kit and gotten 290 to 310 SAE rwhp :nice:

It boils down to how much power you wanna go for

OEM stuff like alphabet cams, intakes, heads, and the like ... 245 to 275 rwhp
Aftermarket stuff will climb up a bit more like said above

Then again ... the aftermarket stuff usually means more money
