Hey guys,

I want to swap a 331 for my 94 cobra engine, has anyone seen a stroker sorted out for stable idle, etc. with a J4J1 computer?

I plan to build it with AFR 185 60cc heads, Fordstrokers 331 short block, tmoss GT40 lower, and a custom grind from Compcams. I already have a quarterhorse in it and LC-1. Any advice on who or where to get idle tuning info particular to the 94/95 computers would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

TonyL

Any tuning shop should be able to get you a nice idle.

of course a stroker can have a good idle. mine idles nicely at 700 with lots of lope. it is all in the tune.

I'll hit the high spots
but
You'll need to fill in the blanks with your own research

A good place to do it is here with a search
but
You will have to go back as far as 2 to 3 years ago

We were way more active with all the tuning stuff back then :Word:

Another place for tuning info is eectuning.org

First thing is to get a suitable meter and a transfer curve loaded for it

Then raise your idle to 900 rpm to start out with

Next I would start off adding about 15% to idle values such as
Throttle Body Airflow
Neutral Idle Airflow
also ... See what peeps are using for ISC Duty Cycle these days

That should get you started

thanks guys

My engine builder said it wouldn't idle right with a 94 PCM, which I didn't think was entirely true, but meant I needed to get some advice from folks who had gotten it to work.

Thanks for the feedback. I have searched the old posts but did not find too many details specific to strokers. Now I have a better picture and some leads on tuning shops if tuning myself does not work out [thanks Kurt].

cheers,

TonyL

it won't idle good right out of the gate no. The cam specs should be more your concern not the fact that it is a stroker.

Get an SCT 4 bank chip and have it tuned on a dyno and it will be fine. Make sure to use a good quality mass air meter, I used a C&L and regret it, I'm going with a lightning maf this time around (on a 347) which will give me a nice 800-900 rpm idle with no surging or hanging idle.

Hello Tony

Stroker or Not ... as far as idle issues ............

The principles are gonna be the same
so
Any info on a h\c\i combo will be applicable to your concerns

I have 24# now with the stock cobra MAF. I don't have room for a bigger MAF so the intake track up to the TB is what it is for now. I am getting a 70mm TB and a Tmoss ported GT40 lower. I have some 30# injectors I can use if I am maxing out the 24's.

I think my cam will turn out close to a Compcams XE264HR [#35-320-8] as camquest6 seems to pick that one for many of the combinations I tried:
0.544 lift
212 I 218 E duration at 0.050
112 lobe centers

I have found lots of info on calibrating MAF transfer functions and injector slopes so I am not too concerned about dialing them in, but idle tuning is a bit more complicated so I am more concerned about getting a good understanding of it.

cheers,

TonyL

You most likely already know this but

The first thing you wanna do is load in your additional cubic inches :Word:

That will change your load factors and you would not wanna do a bunch
of tuning and then plug in your values for the larger motor cause then
the tuning you did for OEM motor size would not be accurate
