Okay so this is a really pecuilar problem. Im going to start from the beginning though, so recently my car has been hard to start like it took a good amount of time for the engine to catch and run on its own power. Then all of a sudden it would not turn on no matter how long i cranked it and I did some testing and found out my number 8 cylinder wasnt firing did some more diagnostics and found the spark plug was broken replaced it and it didnt help so went to the part store with my ICM and bought a new one (determined it was shot) put the new one on and now it does crank and catch but after a long time. So me and my dad were jacking around with the timing to see if that was it, its set perfectly at 10*. Then the car decides it doesnt want to start any more, we jacked with it some more and found out that it will start up like a champ when we turn the distibuter all the way counter clockwise and then we have to bring it back to its normal resting position to keep it running. Im at a loss for words and things to look at. I could use any hints or help thats possible. Want to get it running as soon as possible so I dont have to drive an Inline 4 to college anymore lol.

Set your engine to top dead center compression stroke for #1 cylinder. Pop the distributor cap off and make sure the rotor is pointing to #1. If not, then pull the distributor and make sure the drive gear roll pin hasn't sheared and allowed the gear to move out of time on the shaft. When Ford distributors get old they can bind up in the shaft bushings and cause this. Another possibility is that the reluctor roll pin may have dropped out and allowed the reluctor to rotate out of time on the distributor shaft. There is a small groove on the shaft and in the reluctor where the reluctor roll pin installs. If these grooves are misaligned and the roll pin is gone, then that would be your problem. Let us know what you find and we'll guess some more.

How does your fuel pressure look? Have you tried spraying some starting fluid in the car while trying to start it to see if it cranks right up? You have to figure out whether you're lacking fuel or spark. Since it's trying to start I'm going to lean more toward fuel since spark is usually either there or not there.
Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and see what you have while trying to start it.
