I do a lot of highway driving (back and forth to work) but the stock 2.78 gears suck!
I've heard 4.10's are good in a AODE... yes, it's an auto.. :) but others say 4.10's would suck on the highway...
So maybe 3.73's? What do yall pros say?

thanks, Adam

I have 4.10s and drive a lot of highway. I don't mind it - look online for a calculator and see the (small) difference in RPM between 4.10 and 3.73... you decide.

If you are bored you can search the forum and find MILES of discussion over the two.

I went with 4.10.

Adam, welcome to the boards!

To play counterpoint, I like 3.55's for highway driving. I dont like to tach much over 2K while cruising though.

Slowgt.com has some nice calculators if you want to play with the figures like Wes wisely suggested. And as Wes said, the variances between ratios are not as huge as some would have you believe.

Good luck.

OK...This is the RIGHT ANSWER:
3.73's.

I have an AODE...yeah the 4.10's are nice. At the time I got them I did a lot of hwy driving and I did NOT regret them. To this day I still claim my biggest, bestest mod, esp SOTP feel besides the Vortech was the 3.73.s I drove out of the stang shop that day with the biggest smile on my face. I had NO IDEA our cars could get off the line as quick mine did with the gears. I think there is more to regret getting 4.10s then there is getting 3.73.s ESPECIALLY with today's gas prices!!

4.10's will be fine on the highway. Your heavy aode car needs the gear!

I have 4.30's and have ZERO problems on the highway and I don't tach too high either :)

I swapped from my 373's to 430's and gas mileage was not effected what so ever ;)

Its around 2700 at that speed. Rear tire height is 25.5". .1 shorter than stock :p

It seems like this must be a custom AOD overdrive gear (I recall you talkin about swapping to an Auto some time back, I think) or you still have a 5 spd.

Sold the lentech aod before putting it in. Its still a 5sp, I had a t5z in and i'm in the middle of putting my 3550 back in. The 4.30's aren't as bad as people who don't have them think. My usual highway rpm's range from 2300-2700 depending how fast i'm going. My 4cyl daily driver rev's higher :p

When I put a 26" et street on it, i'll probably wish I went 4.56 :(

hrmm, don't know about AODE's but honestly, I've done more highway driving in my time than most people I know (from coast to coast across Canada a few times and in every other direction as well...)

I would move towards 3.73's...they'll give you all the kick you require with your auto, and they won't drive your gas bill down that much that you'll kick yourself...

as much as I love my 4.10's when I'm light to light....I utterly despise them on the highway....so do my ears
