Start off with tuning the car. Complete tuneup with fuel filter and air filter. I would recommend purchasing some mufflers or weld in some straight pipe. BTW 96-98 2v's are non PI and need some PI heads, cam and intake to make some decent power. stock they are under powered and highly benifit from there 99-04 counter part.

Wow. Hard to read that... I must be getting old.

Did you test drive the car before buying it?

As slayer said, start with the basics:

  • do a compression check
  • examine everything under the hood from the airbox and filter to the last vacuum line
  • inspect the ignition (plugs, coils and wires)
  • check the computer with an OBD-II scanner for codes
  • how are the O2 sensors?
  • when was the fuel filter last replaced?
  • what's the fuel pressure?

The lack of cats may be contributing to the stench but it may also mean misfiring. Is the MIL ("check engine light") on? If not, does it come on when you turn the key from "off" to "run"?

Trinity...you're not getting old. To make any sense, the OP needs some correct spelling and grammar
