96 GT audio upgrade

I just picked up a 96 GT and want to upgrade the stereo. I want an Alpine head unit but also want it to look right. Alpine's website gives me 3 choices and they look fine but my car also has a cd changer from the factory. Can I just yank it and put in a box or cover the hole with a plate? Also how hard is it to replace the factory door speakers? I want to put in new Alpine type R's for replacements of all the factory speakers.

you can buy the plastic piece that will cover the bottom opening from just about any car audio shop.
