Ok, so I'm not even sure if I'm posting in the right place, if not please direct me elsewhere. My husband and I just bought a 97 Cobra and have had an issue we're trying to address and figure out what is going on. Anytime we put it in reverse and have to back up a hill or slight incline, it will usually pop out of gear. It will occassionally do it on a flat surface, but mainly on an incline. Are we looking at a transmission problem or a clutch problem? Thanks for the help.

Hello Cobra owner!!! Welcome to Stangnet. You are posting in the 5.0 section, so you might get more response posting in the 4.6 area.
Anyhow, in general, with the gears popping out you might check to see if it has an adjustable clutch linkeage. If the clutch cable is adjustable it might have been adjusted too tight which can cause the gears to slip out of place. That's an easy place to start looking. Follow the cable under the car to the transmission. Remove the cover and see if the cable has a threaded nut on the end that can be adjusted. Real easy to see and do, and might save some shop money for other things. Heck, Ford might do it cheap enough...just to take a look.
Good luck and happy hunting. Congrats on buying a great car.

I have had 2 Cobra. 96 and 97. Both my cars would pop out of reverse. It is a transmission problem. Welcome to the world of the wonderful T45. I had a new one installed in my 96. Even the new one would pop out of reverse. I couldn't believe it!

Other than that they are great cars!! Enjoy your new found hobby!!!

Welcome to Stangnet. The SVT Tech Forum is a great place, bunch of nice people with experience and good knowledge.

I have seen the t-45 transmission typically stay in gear and lock...lol.

Popping out of gear is common as well...

Try the SVT Tech Section or 4.6L Tech

They are more acustom to the problems you are having

Is there an aftermarket shifter on the car? If so, are the adjustable stops set too closely preventing the shifter to fully engage Reverse??

It could be a few things. Reverse is synchronized on that transmission so it could be front accidental grinding causing the dog teeth to round off and pop when under load.

It could also be a bent shift fork.

Check the shifter first
