I have a 97 escort that I drive in the winter and the service engine light just came on the other day and has stayed on since. Is there any easy way to pull codes without having a code reader? Like with the stang I can use the piece of wire to connect the 2 ports and use the check engine light to count the codes. Is there any way to do this with the escort, or do I have to buy some kind of cheap code reader to do it? Anyone have any ideas?

i think it is obd-II, and thus is more involved to pull codes (no paper clip). go to the parts store and they should pull the codes and reset the light for free.
good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Damn technology anyway! Why can't they just leave things simple! I'll have to go to a parts store and see what they can tell me. The manual for the car says the light comes on when emissions control things need to be serviced so I will see what codes it pulls up! Thanks again!

good luck. let us know what codes you get. i wish i could ditch all the electronics and stick a carb on sometimes. :-)
