hey all, noob question here. is it possible to put 4v heads on my 2v? what is needed for this conversion to make it all run right? i really want to go the n/a route and have my car be all engine. not too extreme but just so i can get about 280 - 300 hp. what would yall recommend? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Possible? Yes.

Simple swap? No.

You will need at the very least: 4v heads/cams/intake/valve covers, 4v throttle body, 4v exhaust manifold, 4v timing cover, 4v wire harness, and probaly a few other odds and ends I am forgetting.

All in all, it gets pretty in depth and isn't a "simple" swap.

My reccomendation is doing a PI (Power Improved, all 99-04 Mustang heads are PI) heads/cam/intake swap. Using stock parts (which can be had MUCH cheaper than the average 4v setup) will give you even a little more boost over what a stock 99-04 4.6 would make because when you put PI heads on a non-PI shortblock it bumps the compression ratio a bit due to the design of the pistons on the 96-98 engines.

With full bolt ons and stock PI cams I imagine you could see 270 rwhp with a decent tune. Add cams into the mix and watch the numbers get closer to where you want them to. Not satisfied? Have the heads ported before they go on, and put some more agressive cams in them. I would be shocked if you didn't see over 300rwhp like that.

Obviously as you do more and more it adds up, but I would almost garantee you a PI 2v swap, or 2v PI swap + cams will satisfy you.

hey thanks for the quick reply. it was very helpful, im actually in school right now learning about engines and such. hopefully when the funds are there and i have the knowledge and tools i can get that kind of job done, but thats a long ways down the road.

do you know how much a full PI swap would cost in parts?

thanks again

No problem...:nice:

Most of us get used heads/cam/intake from people upgrading for bigger and better parts... I've seen people post up deals from $300-$800 for all of that, plus you need a few odds and ends like gaskets and such.

Brand new Ford Racing sells assembeled PI heads with cams included for around $400/head. Not bad at all... PI intakes can be had for under $200.

Is the head swap even that much of a bump ? I've hear the PI intake manifold is where you will see the biggest gains ?

Cams aren't a bad idea either.

The heads do add on, but I have heard that alot of people were satisfied from running just the PI cams and intake on non-PI heads... saving even more labor and cost.

That is REALLY the economical way to go, but you are missing out on better flowing heads and the compression bump.

what kind of after market cams would be at a good price and decent gains?

Lots of companies make 2v cams. Comp, HiTec, CMS, Crane, and other companies. As far as what cam is best, that depends on what all you are looking for and what your setup is.
