it used to happen occasionally but now its almost all the time to the point where ill find parking spots based on not having to back out of them. when i go to put my car into reverse and let the clutch out it grinds or ill get it into gear and it pops back out and grinds while doing it. but if i fight with it long enough i can get it to go into reverse and i can just hold the shifter in place. any ideas? im hoping i dont have to rip apart the trans seeing as i just put a motor in it thanks guys

How is shifting in forward gears? I seem to recall the issue being a unadjusted clutch cable with other people having similar issues. It could also be the syncros and such too.

Try putting it in 1st gear, and then into reverse.

Every Mustang that i ever had, I got so use to putting it in 4th and then reverse. My older 5.0's did the same thing.

Do you still have the stock cable/quadrant setup? If so pull up on it with your toe and then press it down. Do this like 3 or 4 times to make sure your setup is engaging at the right area.

Mine occasionally is finicky where I have to go from 4th or 5th into reverse but a improperly adjusted clutch and our finicky transmissions in combination are probably your issue. The fact that you think it releases/engages too low is the most likely source to your problem.

seems like I remember reading that the reverse gear does not have syncros. That is why putting it in a forward gear helps. Gets it all lined up.
But I could be way off.

I have had the same issue in the past adjusting the cable seemed to help me alot. I read the same thing about no synchros in reverse. between the cable & and putting it in 2nd gear first it almost never happens any more
