Hey Guys,
I have a few questions about a possible transmission swap on my 97 Cobra. My current trans is the one that came from the Factory with the car (T-45 with 103K miles on it) that grinds going into 1st and reverse from a dead stop and grinds from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th:mad: . Its also making an odd grinding noise in neutral:nonono: . (Note: Steed Tri-Ax shifter installed). From reading throught the posts it seems the majority of you all believe the T-45 is a pos and should not be rebuilt but replaced. I would like a T-56 but do not have the means (money) to do that. So a T-3650 seems to be the route I'll take. I have a line on a T-3650 from an 06 GT that has 3k on it (bearly broken in) and was looking to swap it.

Here are my questions:
1. Can I use the same bellhousing as my 45, in other words...can I bolt up to my existing setup?
2. Can is hook this up to a mechanical speedo (96-98's have mech speedos)
3. Do the new T-3650's have the stronger synchros that a TSB fixed on some of the 04's and older?

Thanks...

The 05+ 3650's have a different tailshaft assembly, so that transmission won't be worth it. The bell housing from the 3650 will mate up fine with the engine, a 4.6l is a 4.6l, heh - but the T45 bell housing cannot be used with the 3650 gear box.

2. You will need a Dallas Mustang Extended Range Speedcal for the speedo to operate properly.

3. The 04's are supposed to have the "fix" applied from the factory, so yeah different synchros; the 05+ cars don't seem to have the "typical" 3650 problems (I've never had any problems with my 04 anyways haha).

Thanks Benny,
So your basically telling me to go for a 3650 from an 04 GT?

The T45 and the TR3650 have basically the same set up. The TR hold like 25ftlbs. more torque, but they both suffer from similar problems.

MY new T45 I bought at www.dandperformance.com It has been fine. My original trans popped out of 2nd on a downshift, never an upshift. I am the 2nd owner, so obviously the first owner was poor driver because it was like that when I got it.
