Since I don't smoke, and my ash tray does nothing but hold change, I thought I might go with the 98 cup holders instead. Do I need to buy a whole new center console for this, or is there a way to simply swap them around.

I've seen 98 center consoles on ebay for around 40-90 dollars. Shouldn't be so bad.

Here is a better link.

Or you could get one of these cup holders. I got one, they are a little clunky, but not too bad.

You can swap out the consoles easily or do the mod in that article. It's simple to do also and should only take about an hour or so. I got my cup holder on ebay.
You can cut out the hole with a dremel but measure and trim carefully. You can always keep shaving off more but it sucks to try and add more back on so be patient.

FWIW, I had a friend who had a 98GT and another who had a 00GT, we noticed the 00GT had deeper cup holders and held them better. Only thing that sucked was the shifter at some points hit the front cup holder.

You could always try stang parts. That's where I got my 98 center console and if i remember correctly it only cost me like $60.00. The website is www.stangparts.com

Are the 99-04 cup holders usable in the SN95 consoles? I've heard suggestions of it, but I don't know if it works or not. I can't seem to find a 98 stang in a yard up here in minnesota, as I'd like to do this, too.
Someone posted the following part numbers for the 98 cup holder:
F8ZZ-6313562-AAA
XR3Z-6313562-AAA
The first one seems to be deprecated for the second one. Ford dealer near me says price is $57.70 for the part new.

I cut my 94 console to fit the 98 cupholder. I have actually done this twice. The 98 cupholder is a different color black than our black, but it's not really noticable. It's the dark charcoal color. There is also a little rubber mat that goes in the bottom of the cupholder.

I used a dremel and a utility knife to cut the console. Take little bits out and test fit a lot. Be especially careful of the little rectangular notch in the rear. If it's just a bit too big, it will be seen when the cupholder is installed. When you are done, you will love it!

It came out of an 01. I did a search for consoles and it cost me $8. It is a dark charcoal color and I painted it black.
