98 Explorer 5.0 ???s

I was just wondering if all the 5.0 Mustang bolt ons would work on a 98 Explorer with the 5.0?

i'm sure not 100% of mustang bolt ons would work, but only because the engine bay is different so depending on what you're talking about, you might have clearance issues with other accessories or components in the engine bay. but yes they will all bolt up to an explorer motor.

when I go to put headers on it doesnt the explorer have the "P" head on it?

by bolt ons I am thinking...Mass Air, ThrottleBody, Intake Manifold, Underdrive pulleys...thinks of that nature.

yes to everything you just said. your truck came with gt40p's, so i'd recommend you go with ford racing shorties or MAC long tubes, otherwise you'll be removing the headers anytime you need to pull your spark plugs.

I have a 4x4, will the long tubes fit? I am fairly confident the Ford shorties will.

Is there a market for the GT40P heads anymore? I know there used to be. If so I am thinking about saving for a Trickflow top end kit, and have a quick little SUV!!!

p heads take p specific headers I have heard of soke people using shorty spark plugs and boots on wires and getting away with burning them up, you will also need to switch the front dress( timing cover dampner brackets)

Would you mind going into a bit more detail on the front dress, and what you mean by getting away with burning them up? I dont want to burn anything!

yeah i doubt the LT's would fit. some plug companies make "shorty" or "stubby" spark plugs that are made for situations such as this. i'm sure you've seen the fiberglass boot protectors or header wraps that'll protect your plug wires from getting burnt being so close to your header primaries. he's saying he's seen people use them and get away with not having to use P specific headers, but IMO, if you're going to cough up the dough to do it, do it right.

what about bumping the timing? this explorer has a different ignition system then a regular mustang 5.0, it looks distributorless.

This thing is terrible on power now that I have driven it for a day. Really needs an exhaust system and a CAI and under drive pulleys AT LEAST!!! Might even have to put a 50shot of nitrous on it to get it moving . This explorer must way 4000+ pounds.

maybe it could use a set of 3.73s?

being that it is a 98 that makes it an OBDII computer system. your spark, timing and fuel are all controlled by the computer and therefore cannot be adjusted externally. I would wait until after you do, certain things. the computer will be able to handle certain things w/o a big deal like cai, catbacks, underdrives minor stuff like that. headers would require a tune to get the most bang out of them, mass air meters the same since most of them that I have seen make the engine run rich. changing the intake, heads and major stuff also reqiures a dyno tune the comtpuer will not be able to handle these changes in air flow, you will also need bigger fuel pump and injectors maybe the tune would tell you.

in short with the obdII type systems you need to modify in steps so you are not spending tons of money tuning all the time. the stuff you want to do though will require a tune.

You will need a tune to adjust timing.

The Explorer already has P heads, Cobra-style intake and 65MM TB. The camshaft blows. If you could find a cam that would make TONS of low end torque it would wake the truck up. Also, convert the front end and rear end gears to something steeper.

And watch your gas mileage plummet to 8-10MPG
