Here's the email I just sent the Chief Editor...Doubt he will get through it before deleting it but I had to write it! I guess its old news but its in reference to the Jan. 04 Issue of Hot Rod Magazine.......in which they compare the Subaru WRX to the CObra..

NO WONDER there are so many bad ass kids out there who think there WRX can beat a CObra...they must have read this article....in which the cobra runs 13.3 to the WRX 13.2! and they recommend a gear change to make the cobra do better..

Dear Sir:

I doubt any good will come of writing this, but I have to get this off my mind!

I had never read your magazine until tonight when someone gave me Januarys publication. I doubt I will read it again after reading the Cobra/Subaru Article. I am surprised you published it because it contains so many errors.

I also have to wonder who you had "test drive" the Cobra. I own one and as a novice driver I ran 12.76 on stock tires. I have seen test drivers from Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords both at Englishtown racing and at Crazyhorse Racing dynoing the car. They had the car before it was even released to the showrooms. They also ran 12s...MID 12s!

What you never mention in your article is that the Cobra actually puts out more than the advertised 390. IN fact, it almost puts that out at the wheels. The 03-04 Mustang Cobra is a 12 second car. Its no match for a Subaru and it's really sad you compared them.

You mention a gear change? There's no way that would help anyone. They complained about the car spinning the tires. Changing to 4.10s means you have to use 5th gear. The cars already got plenty of torque and everyone had already figured out that a gear change is plain stupid well before your January Issue came out.

With StickyTires, a chip and a smaller pulley, people including myself, are running high to mid 11 second quarter miles in the Cobra. No Subaru can do that. OH and the blowing up rear you so professionally mention in your article is the result of poor drivers who experience wheel hop (most likely because they didnt lower the tire preasure or just dont know how to launch). Thats when the rear goes...or when people run well over 500HP and use slicks.

I just can't believe you published an article that is so false. I am surprised that Ford can't do anything to you for putting false negative information out there about their product.

Have you read the latest Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords Magazine where they compare the three V8 Mustangs? They ran 12s in the Convertible CObra! In case you didnt know, convertibles are heavier by 180 or so pounds!

Fire your "Test Drivers" then maybe I'll start reading your magazine.

Thank you...if you actually took the time to read all of this!

Sincerely

WHat took so long to write the letter? Its an old article. I wouldnt have wasted your time if I were you, but atleast you spoke your mind.

I stopped reading "Small Block Chevy" oops, Hot Rod years ago. It seemed like they only represented the high-dollar, shop-built vehicles and when they added the "matching" Harley section, I puked.

5.0 Mustang & Super Fords - Nothing like a car-specific magazine for bolt-on tests, owner-built cars and the occasional high-dollar dream machine.

yeah

I have never read hot Rod magazine before. I subscribe to Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords and enjoy it a great deal. EspeciaLLY the recent issue that described the Mach/Cobra/GT......I remember them talking abotu how the Convertible they tested ran 12 sec 1/4 miles! and they said something about another magazine only running 13s (Altitude Corrected!?!) in a COUPE!!!!

I'm sure it won't do any good at all. I just felt obligated to respond because of how just plain stupid the article is. Its one thing to actually dislike a car and give it a bad review, but its just amazing to me that a magazine publish something thats just wrong... Its not just the guys opinion that bothers me. Its his information and lack of basic info on the Cobra. And then to talk about the rears exploding! WTH!! I saw a WRX at the track.....well i have seen many but only one actually running low 13s with some extra work done to it.. At the end of the day the car limped home. you could tell by the sound of it something broke.

I have had my Cobra for 9000 mostly racing miles and have had no trouble with the rear...or wheel hop for that matter...

The article is just so off and it gives these kids on other site and other stupid people all they need to talk about how their car can beat our cars....

And many people here know that I am by no means loyal to Ford. i have had some major complaints about them and about the quality I have experienced in my 99V6, 01Gt and now the 03 CObra...

still this article is just wrong...it should be illegal to write something that is so wrong....its got to hurt Ford and it keeps the kids going for these lousy SLOW IMPs

Jason.. think of it this way. Let those magazine-toting idiots buy the WRX and watch what happens to the WRX market 1 year from now when they have problems with the driveline trying to reproduce those magasine numbers.

Let them find out the hard way on the track/street and see their jaws hit the floor when they see it's near stock and they have dumped $3k into theirs and still lose.

hehehe

yeah ok...

and Im going to make sure I line up against a WRX next time I see one at the track...

All this Rival car BS really gets me going. Last Friday night etown was open I was there pracicing for brackets initially. Trying to run low 12s because i have to for NHRA brackets....uhhhhh

I ended up lining up against a red honda prelude with big asss slicks on the front. he was keeping up with me so after short shifting 1st and 2nd I ran out 3rd but it was too late. He beat me with a 12.1 to my 12.3. The guy was cool...he had a turbo and waas running over 400hp to the wheels according to the dyno he showed me but having some trouble with his tranny... It didnt bother me until some punk asss IMP lover kids with a video camera, came by pointing at my car and his and laughing about how the Honda beat the Cobra.... Soooo that was the end of my bracket practice heheheh I pulled out my headlight and iced the car down and ran 11.8 11.9 11.8 unfortunetely I didnt get up against the Honda again for the rematch.......

it wasnt losing as much as stupid people who dont understand that some of us are there to practice lights or consistent NHRA LEgal times for points (and some people just cant drive)...and then they go on the net and talk about how some IMP can beat a Cobra...

ANYWAY...anyone with a WRX that reads this....YOUR ON! THIS FRIDAY AT ETOWN...as long as theres no rain the forecast IM THERE! SUNDAY too!
but you got to tell me your racing...otherwise Ill be practicing shifting early to slow down and run 12s for brackets...

I HAD some kid at the pizza placein town rev his WRX at me and my friend told me the kid thought he coulld beat my car....Im sure he read about it in Hot ROd up the A Magazine  :flag: :flag:

To most import kids an STI is like a Z06 is to one of us. Stock WRX drivers know they don't have a chance. And the word on the street is basically to not mess with 03 Cobras. There will always be the uninformed, so you just have to scare them, and then you will be king of the hill. A great way to do this is by modding an old car. For all the "old american cars are crap" that you hear, all the import people save the Supra guys shut up when I roll up. And pretty much everyone shuts up when the primered Chevelles roll in.

That's a really old article BTW, and they already got a lot of heat for it. Frankly, that's a slow time for the STI as well.

Miklowcic...I hear ya bro! You've got to consider the people you're talking about though. I get it all the time "oYeah, ya might be able to get 13's out of this thing" or "I've got an integra with a Dragon intake and some flywheel work that'll take that", my favorite-"I bet mines louder though". These guys kill me....You just have to humor 'em though!

I don't get heated up over magazine articles but your response was right on the money. It's obvious they didn't drive the hell out of that Cobra. Of course if they didn't put forth max effort with the Cobra, did they with the WRX? Meaning, perhaps the WRX could have gone a bit quicker as well.

ahhh

The WRX's ive seen cant even run those numbers....not at the track anyway.. Ive seen many of them.. MOdded I havent seen them do better than low 13s..

Never seen any of them run the numbers that mag says...

I saw a modded one go 13.1 i dont remember what had been done to it exactly....

I guess maybe its just the drivers. People that buy the WRX arent usually track regulars.

cover

I just looked at it again hehehehe ill have to burn it this weekend!

What really kills me is that they have it right on the cover!

Cobra VS. Subaru WRX STI

More Alike Than You Think

BOTH RUN 13s! (Right on the freaking cover!!!!!!)

Which One Should You Buy?

hmmmmm definetely the Subaru since its soooo fast and it has four sexy doors.

well...

well there were no takers.. went to etown friday night....

My first run the kid with a VW something didnt want to race me and didnt wave anyone on...he just sat back as the guy yelled for him to pull up. I had already staged so they let me run alone!!! the imps wouldnt race me heheheh

ran 11.88 11.89 11.93 11.90

not bad for 70 degrees... ran my 11.70 when it was almost 40 out side... also ran lousy 60ft 1.80 on my first two runs...

SHOW ME A WRX THAT CAN DO THat HOT ROD UP THE A Magazine

miklovic, aren't you the same guy that swears up and down that a bonestock Z06 on DR's can't run 11's? In fact, I think you've said time and time again you've never seen a vette in the 11's?? And you're a track regular??

so what, they didn't get the best time ever out of a cobra. It's not worth getting worked up over it. Just forget about sending the hot rod staff a xmas card this year. :D

hey now

YUp JB you got it right...

I am at the track at least once a week and still have not seen a Stock Z06 run 11s! Of course most Vettes are owned and run by old guys that cant drive! :owned: :p thats a joke

Seriously i havent seen one..but never said it wasnt possible..and my response months ago was aimed towards Vette people on stangnet talking SSSS about stangs. 03 cobras specifically..

There s a guy at etown who was running high 11s in his modded Z06 vette who now has a Turbo..twin turbo i think on his vette...and all the safety equip. im looking forward to seeing him run...and I have had fun racing him before....it was funny cause one run he red lighted and crossed the line first and next time we lined up I red lighted and beat him.

MY BIG FU has been extended to AUto Trend and Road and Track who also have the cobra listed as a 13 second car..........

BTW....i dont really care about any of this...just having a good time....but it is interesting how this articles IMOP have certain cars running real good times and the cobra running slow compared to most ive seen at the track.

I also have yet to see a WRX run low 13.2 or 13.1 like those mags say...i think thats a high number for that car..
