A/C Compressor "Test" - Not mounted on car

I removed the underhood a/c components a few years ago, and stored them. I've decided that I want to reinstall the A/C. The compressor "looks" great (very clean ) and was stored wrapped in plastic and with the openings plugged.

I took it out of its packaging and tried to turn the compressor but could not turn it by hand. The pulley on which the belt rides turns freely, quietly, and smoothly, but I could not get the compressor to turn.

Is my compressor D-E-A-D or should it be hard to turn? Will it work once reinstalled?

I guess I'll add $300 to my ac restoration/R134 conversion....

That'll make ALL my a/c components brand new.
